K-State Caps Perfect Weekend with Four-Set Win Over UCA
Sep 07, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State used 17 kills from both Brynn Carlson and Peyton Williams to defeat Central Arkansas in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15) to cap an undefeated weekend at the K-State Invitational Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
"We got better as we went, which has been a hallmark of the weekend for us," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "As the matches got longer, we got better. Which, I think, in the long run is a pretty good sign. I was really proud of them through the whole course of the weekend. They showed a lot of perseverance, there were times it wasn't coming easy and we weren't playing cleanly, but we still found a way to grind through it."
Williams was named K-State Invitational MVP after hitting .347 over three matches and averaging 3.14 kills per set. Setter Sarah Dixon also earned all-tournament accolades, as she picked up a pair of double-doubles over the weekend and averaged 9.710 assists per set and 2.64 digs per set.
Williams' kill total marked a career best, as the redshirt junior hit .400 (3 errors, 35 swings) to go with four blocks and a service ace against Central Arkansas (4-3).
Carlson hit at a .350 clip, a season high, and reached double-digit kills for the sixth time in six matches this season.
Mutiri did not record an attacking error in registering 11 kills on 30 swings (.367). The sophomore opposite added three digs and two blocks.
"We call them our three-headed monster," Fritz said of Carlson, Mutiri and Williams. "Those three are the most experienced and have the capacity to generate kill production. They are in the rotation all opposite of each other, so at any point we have one, and sometimes two, of them available in the front row. Sarah does a tremendous job distributing between those three attackers."
K-State (4-2) limited UCA to a .155 hitting efficiency behind a season-high 10.0 team blocks, including four total blocks from Anna Dixon, Megan Vernon and Williams. The Wildcat offense hit .300 as a team and owned a 63-52 edge in total kill production.
Freshman libero Dru Kuck turned in 28 digs in four sets, her second straight 20-dig outing. Kuck ended the weekend with 71 digs, good for 5.07 per set.
The Cats fought off four set points in the opening set before dropping a 25-23 decision. Williams killed six balls on 10 swings without an error (.600) while Carlson added five kills on 11 attacks.
The Bears climbed within a single point late in Set 2, but a pair of Mutiri kills helped K-State level the match at a set apiece. Mutiri tallied three kills in the second set while Carlson and Williams each added four.
UCA held a 20-18 lead in the third set, but the Cats stormed back and closed the pivotal frame on a 4-1 run. Two of K-State's final three points came via a Carlson kill, a she recorded five in the set. The defense held UCA to a .121 hitting percentage in the set behind nine digs from Kuck and three team blocks.
K-State hit .400 in the final set, tallying 15 kills with only a single attacking error on 35 attempts while forcing the Bears into as many attacking errors as kills (8) for a .000 efficiency. Anna Dixon had a team-high four kills in the set and Mutiri sealed the win with her 11th kill of the night.
Central Arkansas was led by Abbie Harry who had a dozen kills and 10 digs. Madi Bowles and Lexi Miller each ended with 10 kills. UCA's all-tournament selection, libero Emily Doss, registered 20 digs.
The Cats venture on a seven-match road swing beginning at the MSU Fall Invitational hosted by Missouri State. K-State will take on the Bears Thursday at 6 p.m., before facing Weber State and Dayton on Friday.
