No. 11 Cats Upended by Jayhawks in Four Sets

Oct 29, 2020 | Volleyball

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite a match-high 22 kills from Aliyah Carter, No. 11 K-State was upended by Kansas in four sets Thursday night (11-25, 23-25, 25-11, 22-25) in the season's first Dillons Sunflower Showdown at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

Carter, a freshman, logged her second career 20-kill outing while hitting at a .450 clip (4 errors, 40 swings). Fellow freshman Jayden Nembhard also hit .450 in picking up 12 kills off the bench. K-State (5-4, 5-4 Big 12) saw its two-match winning streak come to an end while KU (2-7, 2-7 Big 12) snapped a seven-match losing skid.

"It was a slow start," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We thought our left sides were tremendous. Jayden came in and gave us a little bit of a boost. She and Aliyah, I thought, both played tremendously well.

"Really, we broke down pretty significantly in the areas of serving and passing and we weren't able to generate offense anywhere other than our left (sides). I thought Kansas played extremely well. Their transition game was good, and their serving caused us a lot of problems."

KU raced out to a 14-4 lead to start the match and later closed the opening set on a 5-1 run in limiting K-State its lowest single-set point total of the season. The Jayhawk offense hit .625, committing just a single attacking error, while serving up five aces in a 25-11 set victory.

Carter accounted for four of the Wildcats' six kills in the first frame. As a team, K-State hit .050.

Nembhard came off the bench in the second set and promptly put down five kills, with three coming on her first three swings of the night. Carter tallied seven kills on 12 swings without an error (.583) as the Cats hit .344 with 15 total kills in the set.

KU rattled off five consecutive points midway through the second set after the Cats owned a 15-14 edge. K-State battled to tie the score at 19 before the Jayhawks opened a two-set lead after a set-ending kill by Caroline Crawford.

The third set saw K-State hit at a .450 clip while holding Kansas to a .069 efficiency. A six-point scoring run was part of 13-4 closing burst by the Wildcats. Carter and Nembhard each added four kills to their ledgers in a 25-11 set victory.

Carter registered seven more kills in the fourth set, hitting .385. The Cats held an 18-15 lead late in the frame before KU scored four unanswered points to regain the lead. With K-State leading 22-21, the Jayhawks ended the match with another four-point burst. In total, the final set held seven tie scores and four lead changes.

K-State held a 44-42 edge in total kills while KU hit .323 to the Cats' .267. Each side recorded nine service aces.

Freshman libero Mackenzie Morris had a match-best 12 digs and accounted for four of the Wildcat aces to equal her career high. Morris has tallied multiple aces in three straight matches while leading the team in digs in all nine matches this season.

Jenny Moser led KU with 10 kills. Rachel Langs tallied six kills and hit .364 to go with five block assists.

The Wildcats and Jayhawks conclude the 2020 Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Friday at Horejsi Family Volleyball Center at 6:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
