No. 10 Wildcats Survive TCU, Push Winning Streak to Five

Nov 14, 2020 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan.Brynn Carlson matched a season high with 20 kills while Aliyah Carter added 19 as the 10th-ranked K-State Wildcats survived in five sets against TCU Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11.

K-State (10-4, 10-4 Big 12) extended its winning streak to five matches, as the Cats have won seven of their last eight contests. The 10 league wins mark the program's most since the 2008 season while also solidifying a top-three conference finish for the first time since 2008.

"I think we are growing up," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "The competitive composure that it takes to [win in five] – that was kind of a grind, not all matches feel that way. Yesterday felt easy, today felt like a grind. Every match is a little bit different.

"And I will say, truly, the TCU team we played yesterday, in terms of personnel, were two very different teams. It was a brand-new match, essentially. It required some on-the-fly adjusting. We talked about it going into it, we anticipated different things, and we had to understand that it wasn't going to feel like yesterday's match. I'm really excited about the competitive composure that I think they're developing. They have competitiveness, that's been there all along, but to put those two words together, that's a whole different thing."

Carlson's 20th kill of the night ended the match, as she recorded four kills in the final set. The redshirt junior was one kill shy of her career high, as she hit .308 on the night.

After TCU closed to within a point at 11-10, K-State scored four of the match's final five points. The closing run included kills by Abigail Archibong, Holly Bonde and Carlson. The Wildcats hit .450 while holding TCU (1-7, 1-7 Big 12) to .172 in the winner-take-all frame.

"Game five is a little bit of a coin flip," Fritz said. "The only thing I can really point to is competitiveness. I think when you get to that point, there's a will and a confidence and a competitiveness that has to take over. That refuse-to-lose mentality, and this team has it."

K-State is 6-2 in five-set matches this season, matching its highest single-season total since 2014. The Cats have won the last four five-setters they have played.

Setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi registered her first double-double of the season with a career-best 55 assists to go with 11 digs. Archibong hit a match-high .643 in logging 10 kills on 14 swings (one error) while also racking up a team-best five blocks.

Libero Mackenzie Morris' 20 digs led all players. It marked her fourth 20-dig performance of the year, as the freshman has led K-State in in the category in all 14 matches.

Bonde turned in a season-high 14 digs while Loren Hinkle added a dozen. K-State owned an 82-71 advantage in total digs.

In the opening set, TCU built an early advantage and held off a late 6-1 rally from the Cats that cut the deficit to two, 24-22. Julia Adams' seven kills and the Horned Frogs' five blocks helped the visitors to the 1-0 lead. Carter and Carlson had five kills apiece for K-State in the set one.

K-State led from start to finish to even the match in set two. A 6-0 scoring run with Adams-Kaonohi at the serve put the Cats up 13-6, and K-State cruised from there. The Cats outhit TCU .310 to .000 in the set. K-State finished with 12 kills and just three errors. Carlson's four kills led the way, while Bonde and Archibong added three kills apiece for K-State.

The Cats led by as many as seven in the early stages of set three, but TCU rallied to tie the score on seven different occasions. An ace by Hinkle gave the Cats set point at 24-21, but back-to-back kills by Adams pulled the Horned Frogs within one and forced a Wildcat timeout. Carter wrapped up the set with her 12th kill of the night. The freshman had five kills in the set to help give the Cats the 2-1 edge.

The fourth set saw a total of 17 tie scores and seven lead changes. The Wildcats held a 21-20 lead before the Frogs tallied five of the final seven points. TCU hit .255 and was led by Adams' five kills in the set. Her 20th kill of the night sent things to a fifth and deciding set.

Adams ended the night with a match-high 25 kills to lead TCU. Mykayla Myers (16) and Katie Clark (13) also reached double digits in kills for the Horned Frogs.
