K-State Holds Off Upset-Minded Newman

WICHITA, Kansas – Playing its first game action in over 260 days, Kansas State women's basketball shook off the rust to survive an upset bid from Newman, 63-59, on Friday night at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Wildcats featured three in double figures, as Christianna Carr (15), Ayoka Lee (14) and Laura Macke (13) surpassed the 10-point mark. Carr paced the Wildcats on the boards with nine rebounds, while Lee and Macke each tallied three steals each.

Using its experience from two games in the MIAA, Newman (1-1) built a five-point lead, 14-9, with three minutes to play in the opening quarter.

K-State would end the frame with six straight points to hold a 15-14 lead at the end of the quarter as Emilee Ebert buried a pull-up jumper with 10 seconds remaining. Ebert would end the night with six points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Wildcats kept its momentum into the second quarter and outscoring the Jets, 15-6, in the second quarter. K-State used a 13-3 run to build a 28-17 lead with 4:29 remaining. Carr and Lee each tallied four points during the run.

Newman would pull within eight, 28-20, but Carr converted a driving layup with 28 seconds left to give K-State a 10-point halftime lead, 30-20.

The Jets would catch fire from beyond the arc in the third quarter and outscore the Wildcats in the frame, 22-17. Newman would shoot 5-of-9 from deep in the frame, but K-State held the lead at the end of the quarter, 47-42, courtesy of a 3-pointer from Carr at the buzzer.

Newman would use a 9-2 run to begin the fourth quarter to capture its first lead, 51-49, since the first quarter. The final points of the run came from Haley Albers on a 3-pointer. Albers would lead Newman with 15 points on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats would build a four-point lead, 56-52, on a 7-1 run as Lee finished a layup, Carr buried a 3-pointer and Macke finished a hustle play from Carr with a layup. K-State would outscore Newman in the paint, 34-16.

The Jets closed to within one point twice in the final two minutes, but K-State kept Newman at arm's length with a layup from Lee and a three-pointer from Rachel Ranke.

K-State finished the night shooting 32.4 percent (24-of-74), including a 5-of-33 (.152) from beyond the arc. Newman shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) and was 9-of-22 (.409) from 3-point range. The Wildcats pocketed 15 steals and registered a 23-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

K-State will officially begin its 53rd season of women's basketball on Sunday at 1 p.m., as the Wildcats host Southern. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the game is closed to the public.
