Williams Named to Wade Trophy Midseason Watch List
Feb 19, 2020 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State senior forward Peyton Williams, a preseason selection for the 2020 Wade Trophy Watch List, remains on the prestigious list in an announcement of the Midseason List by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Williams was the sixth player in program history to be named to the Wade Trophy watch list earlier this season, as Tammie Romstad, Priscilla Gary, Nicole Ohlde, Kendra Wecker and Shalee Lehning all previously earned the distinction. Romstad, Gary, Ohlde and Wecker were each finalists for the honor.
This season, Williams is averaging a double-double with 16.0 points and 11.8 rebounds with a .473 field goal percentage and a .755 free throw percentage. She is one of two players, Lee is the other, in league play to average a double-double with 16.9 points and 11.5 rebounds.
Williams ranks fifth in the nation in rebounding, seventh in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (8.1 drpg) and tied for 19th in the nation for double-doubles (12).
For her career, Williams is the first player in program history with 1,400 or more points, 900 or more rebounds, 200 or more assists, 150 or more steals and 100 or more blocks. The product of Topeka, Kansas, ranks 12th in school history for career points, fourth for career rebounds and fifth for career blocks.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 43rd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen.
First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2020 Wade Trophy will be announced April 2 in New Orleans — site of the 2020 WBCA Convention and NCAA Women's Final Four.
K-State returns to Bramlage Coliseum tonight, as the Wildcats host TCU at 6:30 p.m. This evening's game will be the annual Play 4 Kay game, as the first 1,500 fans will receive a free pink K-State women's basketball t-shirt. For tickets, contact the K-State Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 221-CATS or visit kstatesports.com/tickets.
The game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, as well as on the K-State Sports Network and for free on kstatesports.com/tickets.
