Islanders’ Four-Run Third Dooms Wildcats
Feb 22, 2020 | Baseball
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a four-run third inning, including three runs with two outs, in handing Kansas State a 5-2 defeat Saturday night at the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field.
K-State starting pitcher Carson Seymour did not allow a hit through the game's first two innings before surrendering three walks and two hits in the Islanders' four-run frame. Scott Hastings and Tristan Welch supplied back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the third to cap the TAMU-CC (1-4) inning.
"Too many free passes tonight – four walks, two hit by pitch," said head coach Pete Hughes. "Credit the other team, they got two-out hits, we didn't. We had opportunities to get two-out hits. I thought we were non-competitive offensively from the third inning on. I don't think we responded well after going down. We are going to have to get better in that regard."
The Wildcats (3-3) stranded nine baserunners in the game, leaving the bases loaded in both the second and fifth innings. In the seventh, K-State left runners on the corners and finished the game 2 for 12 with runners on base.
Seymour suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits, striking out four and walking four. The redshirt sophomore drops to 0-2 on the season.
"I think he tried to do too much, especially when runners were on base," Hughes said of Seymour. "When he got out of the stretch, you've got to slow things down, you can't speed thing up and I think that's what happened to him."
Hastings and Welch each finished the game with two RBI while Hastings had a game-high three hits. Four of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's five runs came with two outs.
The Cats manufactured a run in the top of the first inning after Cameron Thompson led off the game with a walk and later scored on the second wild pitch of the inning by TAMU-CC starter Hayden Thomas. Kamron Willman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Thompson to third to help give a one-run lead to Seymour before he took the hill.
In the third, Thompson doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Willman, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Thompson produced K-State's only multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 with two runs and a walk.
Hastings came through with his second RBI single in the fifth inning, ending Seymour's day with five earned runs on his ledger.
In relief of Seymour, Jaxon Passino and Zak Herbers combined to keep TAMU-CC scoreless over the final 3 2/3 innings, putting together a stretch of 11 straight Islander hitters put down. The duo allowed three hits in relief while Herbers struck out two.
In the win for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Thomas struck out five over five full innings with two runs on four hits.
Islanders reliever Daniel Nelson picked up the save as he limited the Cats to two hits over the final four innings while striking out five.
The Cats will take on Utah Sunday at 11 a.m. to wrap up the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. The game will be streamed live on FloBaseball.TV (paid) with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Free, live audio is also available on K-StateSports.com/watch.
