Shockers Fend Off Wildcats Wednesday, 2-1
Feb 26, 2020 | Baseball
WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State got a go-ahead home run from Cade Clemons and a career-high nine strikeouts from starter Tommy Barnhouse in fending off K-State Wednesday afternoon at Eck Stadium, 2-1.
Clemons' solo shot broke a scoreless tie in the third inning and was the first hit allowed by Wildcat starter Kasey Ford, who retired the first seven WSU hitters he saw. Hunter Gibson gave Wichita State (6-2) a two-run lead with his two-out RBI single in the fifth. Dylan Phillips homered in the seventh for K-State (3-5).
Ford issued five walks with two earned runs allowed over his 4 2/3 innings, taking the loss in his second start of the year.
"You can't give people free bases," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "A two-out walk scores, they got a two-out hit and we didn't. When your offense is struggling, you need to get a two-out hit and it didn't show up today. It's frustrating because we pitched good enough to win. You've got to create some offense at some point."
Barnhouse limited the Cats to three hits in 5 2/3 innings in earning the victory in his first start of the season. The WSU senior issued one walk against his career-best strikeout total.
Three Wichita State pitchers combined to strike out 12 K-State batters while allowing just two walks. The Wildcat offense was held hitless with runners on base (0 for 9).
Connery Peters tossed a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to pick up the save for the Shockers.
Daniel Carinci accounted for K-State's first two hits – a single in the third before a two-out double in the fifth – finishing the game 2 for 2 with a walk to lead K-State.
In the fifth, Couper Cornblum drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cornblum scored on Gibson's single and after David VanVooren singled, Ford's day was complete.
Relievers Zak Herbers and Brett Lockwood combined to limit WSU to one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings. Herbers struck out two and wiggled out of a two-on, two-out jam when entering the game for Ford in the fifth.
Phillips cut the Shockers' lead in half with a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning. The sophomore became the first Wildcat with multiple home runs this season, as he tallied his second of the year and 12th of his career.
Cameron Thompson went 1 for 4 in extending his on-base streak to a dozen games, dating back to last season.
Jack Sigrist and VanVooren each collected two hits for the Shockers.
K-State is set to unveil the newly renovated Tointon Family Stadium with a Friday doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
