Rowing Begins 2020 Season with Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday
Feb 27, 2020 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Getting out on the water for the first time in the spring season, the Kansas State women's rowing team will travel down to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma this weekend for the Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday, February 29. The team will go head-to-head with Big 12 foe Oklahoma on the Oklahoma River for the race.
Â
"We are looking forward to getting on the water," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "The team hasn't been on water since winter camp so more than anything, we look forward to the chance to see the athletes in boats."
Â
The scrimmage will feature four-training sessions that will allow the Wildcats to get out on the water for the first time since winter camp in Austin, Texas back on January 8-17. Focusing on technique and different seating assignments, K-State looks to prepare itself for the latter part of the spring schedule with Oklahoma as a counterpart.
Â
"The scrimmage set up will include practice pieces of various lengths and rates which will allow all crews to see where they stand on water," said Sweeney. "This event is good because it is an intense training session which sets us up for the spring camp the following week."
Â
This will be the fifth-consecutive year the Wildcats will travel to the Sooner State.
Â
K-State will travel five boats to this event. Each boat will take on their Oklahoma counterpart in two separate practice sessions Saturday morning. While on water, coaches from both schools will collaborate to determine what type of work pieces will best benefit their crews. This is a unique opportunity for coaches and athletes to work together to kick off the spring racing season in a relaxed, yet competitive environment.
Â
The 2019 campaign provided impressive performances from the Wildcats, which included a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships to close out the spring slate last season. K-State captured two medals during the regatta amongst its Big 12 foes last year in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. During the Sunflower Showdown with rival Kansas two weeks before, the Wildcats swept the competition with 22 points en route to a second-straight victory over the Jayhawks in Kansas City, Kansas.
Â
Stay tuned for live updates on Twitter throughout the day. A full recap of the event in Oklahoma City will be made available on kstatesports.com following the scrimmage.
