Phillips Homers Twice in Cats’ Rout of Jackrabbits

Mar 11, 2020 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State's offense erupted for three home runs and 16 hits, including four hits and two homers from Dylan Phillips, while the pitching staff combined for a two-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over South Dakota State on Wednesday night at Tointon Family Stadium.

Phillips, who got his first career start on the mound, set a career high with his four hits while equaling his career-best efforts with his two long balls and five runs batted in. Zach Kokoska homered in the third inning, as K-State (10-7) plated all 10 runs over a four-inning stretch.

"He's swinging the bat as good as I've seen him," head coach Pete Hughes said of Phillips. "Hopefully we get guys going, Chris Ceballos got a couple hits and Kokoska looked good. Hopefully we get our big guys going for the weekend."

Five different Wildcats registered multi-hit games, including Ceballos and Kokoska. Kokoska launched his first home run of the season and the ninth of his career.

Dom Hughes gave the Cats a 2-0 advantage in the second. His single with two outs drove in Ceballos and Phillips, who both singled to open the inning.

"Great start, getting a two-out hit by a freshman [Dom Hughes] took the pressure off," added Hughes. "Trying to get two-out hits was the story of Tuesday night's game."

After struggling Tuesday night to come up with clutch hits, K-State went 9 for 21 (.429) with runners on base, 5 for 11 (.455) with runners in scoring position and 10 for 17 (.588) with two outs on Wednesday. Eight of the Wildcats' 10 runs came with two outs.

The K-State pitching staff did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, but escaped bases-loaded jams in both the second and third innings. Zak Herbers entered in relief and got a strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the second, and a lineout to center left the bases loaded again in the top of the third.

The Jackrabbits (5-12) left nine on base on the night while going 0 for 12 with runners on base.

Seven pitchers saw action for K-State in the win, walking six and striking out 13. Herbers got the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore lefty Eric Torres punched out five in two innings of relief, one strikeout shy of his career high.

"Allowing two hits gives you a lot of room to work," Hughes finished. "Good team effort by our staff and good for the depth of our program."

The Cats put up four runs in the fourth, their third straight inning scoring multiple runs. Cameron Thompson followed Daniel Carinci's double with one of his own for K-State's sixth run of the contest. Phillips followed with his second bomb of the game, a three-run shot for his fifth of the season, to make it a 9-0 Wildcat advantage.

A Carinci RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth completed the K-State scoring.

Kokoska, Thompson, Phillips, Ceballos and Kamron Willman all had multi-hit games. Phillips extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games while Kokoska reached base safely for the 15th consecutive contest.

Phillips logged 1 2/3 innings with a strikeout in his start on the mound.

K-State continues a nine-game homestand Friday against Eastern Michigan at 6 p.m. The entire three-game series will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Free, live audio is also available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
