Cats Head West for Battle with Stanford

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a three-game series sweep in its home-opening weekend, K-State travels west for a four-game series with the Stanford Cardinal, beginning Friday at 8 p.m. CT at Sunken Diamond in Stanford, California.

K-State (6-5) completed its series sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with a 20-1 victory Saturday. In total, the Wildcats outscored FDU 40-3 while registering 17 extra-base hits in the debut weekend of the newly renovated Tointon Family Stadium.

The Cardinal (4-8) has won three straight home games following a 5-4 victory over 16th-ranked Michigan Tuesday night. Stanford, who entered the 2020 season ranked as high as No. 17, reached the Starkville Super Regional last season.

The Cats and Cardinal will play a Saturday doubleheader before wrapping up the first weekend series between the teams on Sunday. K-State and Stanford last met at the Fullerton Regional in 2011, with the Cardinal claiming a 10-3 victory.

The entire series will be broadcast on Stanford's live stream with radio coverage available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Live, free audio will stream at K-StateSports.com/watch and on the K-State Sports app.

A LOOK AT K-STATE
K-State opened the newly renovated Tointon Family Stadium with a three-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson, outscoring the Knights 40-3 over the weekend ... As a team, the Wildcat offense hit at a .402 clip to go with 17 extra-base hits, including four home runs ... Terrence Spurlin spearheaded the effort with a 6-for-9 weekend that included four doubles, a home run and six RBI ... Cameron Thompson and Kamron Willman matched Spurlin's hit total with six, while each lifted their first home runs of the season ... K-State completed the series sweep with a 20-1 victory on Saturday, marking the first time since 2016 (Feb. 28 vs. Utah) that the Cats reached the 20-run plateau ... On the mound, the Cats yielded just one earned run in 27 innings (0.33 ERA) ... The starting trio of Connor McCullough, Carson Seymour and Jordan Wicks combined to go 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 18 total innings ... Stanford (4-8) snapped a six-game losing streak after it won back-to-back games to claim a series victory over Grand Canyon at Sunken Diamond over the weekend ... The Cardinal, who began the season ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation, have won three straight games and is in the midst of an 11-game homestand after a 5-4 win over No. 16 Michigan Tuesday ... The Cardinal is the first K-State opponent this season that qualified for the 2019 postseason, as Stanford reached the Starkville Super Regional last season ... The Stanford offense is led by Austin Kretzschmar (.357), who has two doubles and a home run ... The Cardinal pitching staff boasts an ERA of 3.03 with 103 strikeouts against 54 walks ... Thompson, a four-year senior and team captain, has started games in center field, third base, second base and shortstop ... Now slotted as the everyday third baseman, Thompson has led the Cats in hits in two of the last three seasons ... If the Pasadena, Texas, product starts all 56 scheduled regular-season games in 2020, he would move into second in program history with 223 career starts ... Thompson is also on the brink of K-State's career top-10 list in career at-bats, singles and games played.
