Seymour’s Quality Outing, Willman’s Three RBI Propel Cats over Cardinal
Mar 07, 2020 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – K-State's Carson Seymour and Brett Lockwood combined to three-hit Stanford while Kamron Willman drove in three runs as the Wildcats took the series opener from the Cardinal, 6-1, Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
Seymour (2-2) struck out a career-best nine hitters over his six innings of work, turning in his second straight quality start to push K-State's (7-5) winning streak to four games. Lockwood carried the load the rest of the way as he logged the final three frames while allowing just one hit and tallying four strikeouts.
"That's what you need on Friday nights," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "You need dominant pitching, clutch hitting and solid defense. I thought we brought all three components tonight. Really good team effort, that was really awesome in all three phases."
Seymour retired the final nine Cardinal hitters he faced, including five strikeouts during that stretch, before giving way to Lockwood. In earning his second victory as a Wildcat, Seymour yielded just two hits, both of which came in the third inning, and surrendered one unearned run.
Seymour and Lockwood joined to put down a dozen Stanford hitters in a row before a leadoff walk in the eighth inning, which was erased by one of three double plays turned by the Cats. The duo held the Cardinal (4-9) to one hit after the third inning while Lockwood faced the minimum in earning his first career save.
K-State took advantage of two Stanford errors in scoring three runs in the fifth inning and breaking a 1-1 deadlock. After Cameron Thompson lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Caleb Littlejim, Terrence Spurlin roped a ball off the left-field wall to score both Dylan Caplinger and Zach Kokoska.
"Our experienced guys came through" added Hughes. "The at-bat by Cameron Thompson was a phenomenal at-bat, he kept spoiling pitches to get a productive out in that situation. He gave us a little room to breathe, then Terry (Spurlin) has been swinging such a hot bat. That's what we expect from those guys in the middle of our lineup."
Daniel Carinci legged out a double in the top of the sixth and Willman followed with a double of his own to extend the Cats' lead to four runs at 5-1. Willman, who drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the second inning, ended the night 2 for 3.
The Wildcat shortstop would add an insurance run after registering a sacrifice fly in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Cardinal's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at a run apiece. Tim Tawa drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. Stanford never got a runner to second base after Tawa's run.
Stanford starter Nathan Fleischli faced six batters and allowed one run (unearned) on one hit before being lifted by Brendan Beck in the second inning.
Beck went on to throw six innings with 11 strikeouts and allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits in suffering the loss.
The Wildcats recorded three RBI with two outs while hitting .273 with two gone. Stanford was held hitless with two outs (0 for 7) and with runners in scoring position (0 for 2).
K-State and Stanford continue the four-game set with a Saturday doubleheader, set to get underway at 3 p.m. CT. Both games will be streamed through Stanford Live Stream with radio coverage on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) available for the nightcap.
