Mar 08, 2020 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State sent its three seniors – Jasauen Beard, Angela Harris and Peyton Williams – into the postseason with an 83-63 win over Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown and Big 12 regular season finale.
K-State secured the 76th win in the series and holds an overall record against Kansas of 76-47. The Wildcats have won 35 of the last 42 meetings in the series with the Jayhawks.
K-State (16-13, 10-8 Big 12) opened the game with a 9-0 run to force a Kansas timeout with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Wildcats' three seniors all scored during the 9-0 run, as Beard hit a jumper, Williams finished a layup and Angela Harris scored five straight to force the timeout.
Kansas (15-14, 4-14 Big 12) ended the first quarter with a 14-5 run to square the game at 14 at the end of the first stanza.
The Wildcats used a 14-2 run to open the second quarter to open a 28-16 advantage with 4:35 remaining. Ayoka Lee scored the first seven points for K-State, while Christianna Carr buried her first of two 3-pointers in the first half. Williams then capped the run with a pair of jumpers.
Kansas would close within nine twice, but Carr hit her second 3-pointer and Lee beat the halftime buzzer with a hook shot to send K-State into the locker room with a 37-23 lead. Williams led the Wildcats at the half with 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting, five assists and two rebounds. Lee tallied nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.
K-State kept its advantage in double figures in the early portion of the third quarter. Williams scored four points, while Carr knocked down her third 3-pointer of the afternoon to give the Wildcats a 46-31 lead with 4:47 remaining.
K-State would hold Kansas without a point for the final 5:32 of the third quarter, as the Wildcats ended the frame on a 15-0 run to hold a 61-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats would increase its lead to 30, 69-39, with a layup from Lee with 7:31 remaining. K-State subbed out its seniors individually in the final three minutes. Harris capped her time on the court with a 3-pointer from the wing with 2:12 to play to give the Wildcats an 83-53 lead.
Williams posted a game-high 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting. With the 24 points, Williams passed Tammie Romstad (1978-82; 1,548) and former teammate Breanna Lewis (2013-17; 1,548) for ninth on the K-State career scoring list with 1,553 points.
Williams added a career-high-tying six assists and pulled in seven rebounds.
All five starters reached double figures on Sunday. Lee improved her school record for double-doubles in a season with her 19th as she carded 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. She hauled in 14 rebounds and blocked two shots.
Carr notched 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc to go with four rebounds and two assists.

Friday's game will be broadcast on FSN and will be available on the K-State Sports Network, free at kstatesports.com, and on the K-State Sports app.
What They Said
JEFF MITTIE, HEAD COACH
Opening statement...
"Well, thought we did some good things today. Peyton certainly came ready to go. She had a good look to her all day. We controlled the ball in the first half, only three turnovers. That was probably one of the keys. The two areas we really controlled well today; we controlled the basketball better today, and we controlled the glass better today which gave us some extra opportunities. Pretty good balance throughout the roster today in finding some offense."
On what Peyton Williams has meant to this team…
"The consistency she gives you, it's hard to explain in a short setting of all the things she does. When you have a player like her who has the ability to have the awareness of what's going on and what's going on inside the locker room. Every player is going through highs and lows. A young player may be overwhelmed. An older player might be frustrated, because they're trying to force things. She has the ability to see those things and help those kinds of players. You guys get to see the basketball side of things. From a basketball side of things, she's a weapon that is hard to guard. We can take her inside. We can take her outside. We can face her up. She's an excellent passer. Her numbers today are through the roof good. She's had a career like that."
On Peyton Williams' personality and the excitement from the bench…
"It not only describes her personality, but describes the culture we're trying to create here. Every teammate is happy for their teammates. Immaturity can get in the way of that sometimes. Peyton is happy for her teammates. She has an awareness that Emma (Chapman) doesn't get a lot of time as her backup. She's excited for Emma to get that opportunity. When Peyton was a freshman, there were games where she maybe didn't get as many minutes. Her teammates were really excited for her when she did. That's part of passing the baton on to the next group."
On how Peyton Williams progressed over her four years…
"Like a lot of high school players, you don't play the level of competition. Growing into the physicality of the Big 12, the speed of the Big 12. What she came in with right away was good fundamentals with shooting and good fundamentals with footwork. She's been able to play through physicality better. She's been able to expand her game off the dribble. All of those things are things we wanted for her to take her game to another level. She's worked hard to do that."
On what the keys were for today's win...
"The extra opportunities, the free throw line was a big difference. The two areas we talked about were that we needed to have extra opportunities, because we needed to be at the free throw line a lot. We needed to own the glass. Those were two areas we felt like we could. The surprise for us today is that we had fewer turnovers than we've really had all year. Our guards did an excellent job of taking care of the ball."
On the importance of ending the regular season on a win…
"You just want to end as good as you can. You know every game's important. You know that going into the Big 12 - I'll say this; I don't necessarily think that ending on a win impacts the next game. What I would say is that playing well, doing things the right way. What I didn't think we did a great job of today; our communication in this game was not as good. That's why you see the higher shooting percentage for them. Those are areas we'll have to address in practice. I did not think that we guarded the ball screen action as well as we're capable of, and that's an area that we've got to do better. Whether you end on a win or a loss, you've got to make some corrections. Why it's important for us is simply because right now, we're a team that's fighting and needs every win we can get to play in the postseason."
On his comfort level on the team's standing for postseason play…
"I have no comfort level. It's not like we're sitting here 28-3. That's a comfort level. We're a team that needs every win we can get, and we'll just have to see where things shake out after the tournament."
JASAUEN BEARD, SENIOR FORWARD
On her improved defense...
"I feel that lately as Coach Mittie has been having me guard full court, my pressure and my timing on when to go for steals as well as blocks has been better and not taking myself out of plays. So him putting me there has been what is making me better on the defense end."
On her improved shooting percentage today…
"I think staying in rhythm helped me today, just being able to catch and shoot made it really helpful for me. Offensively, we were just passing the ball a lot and finding the open people and it really worked in the beginning."
On having Peyton Williams as a teammate....
"It's great, it really is. The leadership that she brings to the team and also her drive, even when she has to check some people sometimes, it's exactly what I feel like we need. Like what we needed this year with Kayla Goth being gone. Kayla Goth was always that person who people would really and truly listen to and be able to take it constructively. I feel like this year Peyton has stepped up into that role and done a tremendous job."
PEYTON WILLIAMS, SENIOR FORWARD
On the improved rebounding…
"I think it's the mentality… rebounding is a mentality. It is very fundamental and you work on it everyday in practice. So the mindset of finding your person, and coach Mittie talked about that before the game about finding your person and eliminating all second chance opportunities."
On whether playing Kansas changed the amount of effort she put into the game…
"Oh of course. It's a great last game to have, and to beat them by as much as we did made it even better."
On what it was like playing at Kansas State for four years…
"I was thinking about that last night. I was a completely different person four years ago. I even saw when I was a little freshman and I was swimming in my jersey. I think it was a privilege to play here and to study under such really good coaching. To have all these leaders come before me has changed me so much."
ANGELA HARRIS, SENIOR GUARD
On adjusting to K-State after transferring…
"The adjustment period, it really didn't take too long. I'm thankful and I'm not thankful that I went to another school first. I think if I would've came here out of high school, it would've been a very tough adjustment because I'm a big city kid and I've never lived outside of a big city. So being here in Manhattan, where everything is more close-knit and together, it would've been a culture shock for me. I think those three years at Houston really helped me, because I was still away from home even though I was technically home. The adjustment period, it probably lasted the first couple of months of the season. Y'all can see now that as we keep playing games, our chemistry has gotten a lot better. So yeah, the adjustment period was probably the first couple of months, and I think we're gelling really well right now."
On having Peyton Williams as a teammate…
"For me it's been great. I came from a team that really didn't have a leader like that besides me. Playing with somebody like Peyton has just been a breath of fresh air, and even Yokie. They've opened up a lot of driving lanes for me, so I'm just so thankful that I've played with players of their caliber, because I don't know if I would've had the season that I've had if I didn't come here, so I'm just really thankful."
