MANHATTAN, Kan. – Six Wildcats received Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors this spring, including senior Ines Mesquita, juniors Maria Linares, Margot Decker and Anna Turco and sophomores Ioana Gheorghita and Rosanna Maffei, as announced today (April 28) by the conference office.
Mesquita earned first team honors for the third consecutive season, while Linares and Turco repeated the honor in 2020. Turco also represented the group with a 4.0 grade point average. Decker, Gheorghita and Maffi all obtained their first Academic All-Big 12 distinction.
Leading the charge for the Wildcats in the No. 1-3 spots, Linares, Turco and Decker each earned six or more wins in their respective positions. Linares, who entered the ITA Preseason Singles Poll at No. 106, ended her season with 8-3 record in singles play while accumulating eight more in doubles competition. Turco and Decker both tallied five doubles victories on the year, while garnering a spot at No. 54 in the ITA Doubles Poll at one point during the spring campaign.
Decker notched eight victories in singles play from the No. 3 position, while Turco gathered six wins primarily from the No. 2 hole. Playing out of the second half of the singles lineup for most of the season, Maffei battled her way to six wins in the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Mesquita played her senior season out of the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively, and recorded two wins in singles play. Gheorghita earned two wins in doubles competition during the spring campaign.
Gheorghita and Maffei each previously collected Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team honors in 2018.
This season's six selections doubled the total from the 2019 season, as Turco, Mesquita and Linares all received first team accolades last season.
All six of the honorees were part of 41 individuals selected to the Big 12's Academic First Team, as a total of 45 student-athletes appeared on the league's first and second teams. First team recipients consist of members who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher.
To qualify for the academic accolade, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
With the 2020 season cut short due to the COVID-19 epidemic, K-State finished its non-conference schedule with an 8-4 mark while reaching as high as the No. 38 ranking in the ITA team polls.
