MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Florentine Dekkers will be heading off to Hilton Head, South Carolina to compete at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W15 Hilton Head Championship at the Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Monday (October 4).
"It's a great opportunity for Florentine or any of our players to participate in a professional event," explained head coach Jordan Smith. "Our goal is to help them reach their highest level either has a collegiate tennis player first and hopefully professionally as well."
In her first day competing as a Wildcat at the Ole Miss Fall Invite on September 24, Dekkers posted a 6-0, 6-2 singles' victory over Alabama's Ansley Cheshire to earn her first collegiate victory.
Earlier that day, Dekkers and doubles partner Ioana Gheorghita had a hard-fought battle against Kelsey Mize and Elysia Pool from Ole Miss. The pair pulled out a 7-5 win.
Dekkers also competed in a doubles match on the third day of competition with sophomore Manami Ukita. The duo gave K-State the first victory of the final day with a 6-2 doubles' win over Alabama's Sydeny Orefice and Cheshire.
The Wildcats haven't competed at the ITF Championships since September 26, 2017, after sending two freshmen, Maria Linares and Rosanna Maffei.
Maffei defeated Tulsa's Mahitha Reddy, 6-1, 6-3. The match marked Maffei's first victory of her collegiate career. In the second round of qualifying, Maffei lost to Texas Tech's Felicity Matlby 6-0, 6-7 (2), 2-6.
