HOCKLEY, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team lost matchups against West Virginia and Texas Tech on Tuesday, as pool play marched on at the Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks Golf Club.
In the morning session, K-State fell to the Mountaineers 4-2-0 before dropping another later in the day to the fourth-seeded Red Raiders, 4-1-1.
The Wildcats had some chances against the Mountaineers but ultimately couldn't get enough holes down the stretch for the win. However, Tim Tillmanns and Cooper Schultz were able to come away with victories.
Schultz was dominant throughout the morning, winning five of the last six holes that led to a 7&5 win. Tillmanns built off his impressive performance on Monday against Oklahoma by picking up his second-straight win by defeating WVU's Max Green, 2 Up.
Luke O'Neill, a sophomore, and Nicklaus Mason, a freshman, both lost heartbreakers against the Mountaineers. O'Neill was narrowly defeated in the final two holes to lose 2&1, while Mason dropped the final hole of a tied match to fall in the morning session.
Ethan Miller lost his matchup 6&5, and Will Hopkins fell 4&3.
"In the West Virginia match this morning, we were in control in three of the matches with another one that was pretty close with a few holes to play," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We made a couple of bogeys, they made a couple of birdies, and the momentum shifted pretty quickly.
"That's the thing with match play - when you have a chance to put a player away, you have to do it," Robbins continued. "We made a couple of mistakes that kept them in it, and we weren't able to close."
The Wildcats put together another strong start in the afternoon session against a talented Texas Tech squad, and Hopkins came up with a clutch 1 Up victory, while Schultz finished with a draw, but it wasn't enough.
Tillmanns couldn't grab his third-straight head-to-head win and lost 6&4, while O'Neill was defeated 7&6, Miller lost 4&2 and Mason fell 5&4.
"Texas Tech just played better than us, plain and simple," Robbins said. "They have a really good team, and we just weren't able to play well enough."
With the win over the Wildcats, Texas Tech moves into the lead of Pool A with nine total points, followed closely by Oklahoma with seven points. Pool B is in a similar scenario with Texas in the lead with nine points and Oklahoma State behind the Longhorns with seven points.
"I saw some really good things from Cooper, Will and Tim today. We just have to build on that and get a couple more guys going for tomorrow," Robbins said.
Kansas State sits two points behind Kansas and will have the chance to jump its in-state rival Wednesday morning as the Wildcats and Jayhawks will square off in the final match of pool play. The Big 12 Match Play Championship will conclude with the championship round in the afternoon. Fans can follow live scoring on Golfstat.com.
