Morris Earns Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Oct 19, 2021 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With a conference-leading 5.86 digs per set over two matches against West Virginia, K-State libero Mackenzie Morris was selected as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the league office revealed Tuesday.

Morris, who earns her first career weekly honor, helped K-State to a series split with the Mountaineers after recording 19 digs in a four-set victory Thursday before adding 22 digs in a three-set contest last Friday. Thirteen of her match-high 22 digs came during the third set Friday.

Her 22 digs equaled the third-highest total in program history during a three-set match in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). The Dallas, Texas, native's dig total is the second-most in the Big 12 in a three-set contest this season.

Morris, a sophomore who has played every set in her career as the Wildcat libero, now has 10 career matches with 20 or more digs – good for fourth in K-State history in the rally-scoring era. Her career average of 4.06 digs per set currently ranks second in the rally-scoring era.

Morris' weekly award marks the first for a Wildcat this season and the 68th under head coach Suzie Fritz. The distinction is the Cats' 21st weekly conference accolade since 2018.

K-State (11-6, 2-4 Big 12) hits the road for its next conference series Thursday and Friday at TCU at Schollmaier Arena. Both contests will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with radio coverage available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and online at K-StateSports.com/watch.
