Bonde’s 20 Kills Help Push K-State Past Sooners

Oct 02, 2021 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. Holly Bonde turned in the first 20-kill performance of her career, helping push K-State to a four-set victory over Oklahoma Saturday at McCasland Field House, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16.

Bonde, a redshirt junior, turned in her career-high kill total at a .372 efficiency, as she committed just four errors on 43 swings. She added four blocks to aid K-State (10-5, 1-3 Big 12) in earning a series split and picking up its first conference victory of the season.

"I think the thing I was most excited about was our defensive point scoring," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "That's where most of our frustrations came from yesterday, just our inability to score points or put any type of point-scoring runs together. Just a big-time upgrade in that phase. We tried some different things with our serving and had some luck with it and we were able to put some point-scoring runs together."

The Wildcats totaled 10 team blocks on the day, holding Oklahoma (7-8, 1-3 Big 12) to a .163 team hitting percentage. Sydney Bolding logged a team-leading six blocks (two solo, four assists) while Haley Warner was in on three (one solo, two assists).

Led by a career-high four aces from Kadye Fernholz, the Cats served up seven aces to Oklahoma's two. Fernholz's nine kills came at a team-best .444 hitting percentage.

K-State owned a 58-46 edge in total kills, while the Wildcat offense rebounded from an opening set in which it hit .000 (10 kills, 10 errors). The Cats hit north of .200 in each of the next three sets, including a match-high .375 efficiency in tallying 20 kills during the second set.

Eight of Bonde's 20 kills came in the second, helping the Wildcats respond from their opening-set setback. Bonde hit .500 in set two, while she committed just one error on 14 attacks.

"I told her after the game she was like a unicorn," Fritz said of Bonde. "Holly was just having one of those days where she was seeing things really well, making great hitting choices with the ball, staying really high and getting good deflections off the block. She was terrific."

Bonde turned in at least three kills in each frame while hitting over .300 or better in three of the day's four sets.

The Minooka, Illinois, product was joined in double-figure kills by Aliyah Carter, who turned in her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 17 digs. Carter added an ace and a solo block.

Setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi handed out 49 assists while adding eight digs and a pair of kills. Libero Mackenzie Morris logged 16 digs with a service ace.

K-State withstood a 9-2 Sooner run and overcame a 15-10 deficit in the opening set, as the Cats later evened the score at 18 following a kill from Bonde. Oklahoma responded by scoring the next six points in claiming set one.

The Wildcat offense was forced into 10 errors while picking up 10 kills, as the Sooners totaled four blocks in limiting K-State to a .000 hitting percentage. Bonde and Carter each logged three kills in the frame while Bolding added a pair.

Bonde threw down eight kills in the second set to help K-State even the match at a set apiece. She hit .500 in the set while the Cats also got five kills from Carter. K-State's offense picked up 20 kills in the second, its most in any single set this season, to go with three aces.

In set three, Bonde and Carter recorded five kills apiece in propelling the Cats to a 2-1 lead. K-State finished the frame by scoring seven of the final nine points, a stretch that included kills from Bonde, Carter and Fernholz.

Defensively, the Wildcats picked up four stuff blocks to suppress the Sooner offense to a .167 hitting percentage. Bonde picked up three of her four blocks in set three while Bolding and Warner each produced one.

The Wildcat block continued to do damage in the fourth, as Bolding was part of four stuff blocks during K-State's streak of nine unanswered points. The 9-0 run opened an 11-2 lead and featured two kills from Bonde.

K-State went on to force OU into eight attacking errors while yielding eight kills for a .000 attacking percentage. The Wildcat block finished the fourth set with five blocks, with a Carter solo block ending the match.

Bonde added four kills in the fourth while Warner chipped in three.

The victory not only snapped the Wildcats' season-long three-match skid but also ended a streak of three straight losses in Norman, marking the team's first win on the road in the series since the 2017 season.

A pair of Sooners eclipsed double-digit kills, led by Mega Wilson with 11 and Paige Anderson with 10. Anderson hit .471 and added five blocks.

Oklahoma setter Peyton Dunn turned in her second double-double of the series with her 37 assists and 12 digs.

OU libero Callie Kemohah led all players with 27 digs.

K-State heads into its bye week and will return to action on Thursday, October 14 as the Wildcats host West Virginia at Bramlage Coliseum for two matches. Thursday's match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start and will be carried on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ while Friday's finale will start at 7 p.m. television coverage on ESPNU.
