Rowing Launches at Jayhawk Jamboree on Saturday
Oct 21, 2021 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will compete at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Saturday (October 23) at Burcham Park for the first time since October 20, 2019. The first race will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. CT.
The last time the team competed at the Jayhawk Jamboree, the Wildcats earned a gold medal in the Women's 300m Eight Sprint race. Teams competing at this year's regatta will be Kansas, Creighton and Iowa.
This race will focus on preparation for the 2022 spring season and will mark the only event for the 2021 fall season for the Wildcats. Historically, the Jayhawk Jamboree hosted its first event back on October 20, 2013.
"The Jayhawk Jamboree is a break in the training," stated head coach Patrick Sweeney. "It gives them the chance to just let off some steam and have more fun with it than in the spring. Hopefully with the youngsters on the team, they can learn a lot and we can see if they can run with a little bit of pressure."
After an unprecedented 2021 season, K-State tallied 87 points to finish third among traditional Big 12 foes (Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia) and fifth overall among affiliate members (Alabama and Tennessee) at the 12th Big 12 Championships on May 15. The Wildcats came out 10 points higher than rival Kansas (77) with whom they lost to at the Sunflower Showdown on May 1.
Graduates Logan Frost and Taylor Hartman were selected for All-Big 12 accolades.
The First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight boats both finished fourth, while the Second Varsity Four was fifth and First Varsity Eight turned in a sixth-place finish.
A total of 25 members of the team were also selected to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 teams. Among the 25 selections were six individuals who achieved 4.0 grade point averages during the 2020-21 academic year, including Ellie Hahn, Madison Jensen, Kate Odgers, Lauren Plum, Marisa Rodriguez and Jessica Schenk. Hahn, Odgers and Schenk have now posted a 4.0 GPA each of the last two seasons (2019-20 and 2020-21).
The Jayhawk Jamboree is a head race and uses a time-trial format. Boats will be launched approximately 10-15 seconds apart from one another and the boat with the fastest time wins the competition.
