Gold Medal Novice 4+ Performance Highlights Jayhawk Jamboree

Oct 24, 2021 | Rowing

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Overcast skies were not an issue at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Saturday (October 23) as the Kansas State women's rowing team came home with a gold medal and three Top-Five finishes.

"First we just want to thank KU rowing for putting on this event. The conditions were great and made for some good racing," said assistant coach Hanna Wiltfong. "As far as the athletes go and their racing today, it was really positive to get a solid snapshot of what the team can do. It is good to see them confident and leaning into each other."

The Wildcats had an impressive gold medal performance in the Novice 4+ race. Boat A consisting of freshman coxswain Paige Fox, freshmen Neva Roenne, Emily Stark, Anna Ryan and Kendra Hamman came in with a time of 21:17.294, almost 25 seconds faster than Iowa's Boat A.

First up for the day was the Varsity 4+ race. Leading the way for K-State was Boat A, consisting of sophomore coxswain Kelsey Ladlie, juniors Elizabeth Mummert, Maya Morrow, Megan Michaelis and freshman Rachel Harman with a time of 20:22.210 in fifth. Not far behind in eighth was Boat C with a time of 20:39.777 consisting of sophomore coxswain Sydney Smith, sophomores Lauren Walker, Kaylee Kleinschmit, Jadyn Greisen and junior Ellie Hahn.

"Staying focused is the most important part of the fours race," stated co-captain Michaelis. "It is a longer piece, so you have to keep your mind right the entire time."

The Jayhawk Jamboree marked the first race as a Wildcat for multiple freshmen. After months of training and preparation, the whole team was able to see their work in action at the sole competition of the fall season.

"There were a lot of nerves for my first race day ever. A lot of nerves at the beginning, but I feel good," told Harman. "It was a good experience to get out in the fall season and just work together with the team. This was good for us so we could see what race day is like with everyone."

Up next in the Varsity 4+ race was Boat B with sophomore coxswain Lauren Plum, juniors Madison Jensen, sophomores Idallis Shaffer and Patricia Hokanson and freshman Madison Koller. The Wildcats finished in 12th, recording a time of 21:02.537. Lastly was Boat D in 13th clocking in at 21:05.553 made up of coxswain Fox, sophomores Jessica Schenk, Lindsey DeVreugd, Alyssa Buettner and junior Kate Odgers.

K-State took a short break before competing in the Varsity 8+ race. With a time of 18:28.702 and earning fourth was Boat A with Plum, Mummert, Morrow, Harman, Michaelis, Koller, Jensen, Hok and Shaffer. In sixth was Boat B made up of Ladlie, Walker, Kleinschmit, Hahn, Greisen, Schenk, DeVreugd, Buettner and Odgers.

"The second race, I think, gave the whole boat a lot of confidence because starting off so strong really helped us imagine where this boat can go later in the year. It is really encouraging for our boat," explained Michaelis.

"Focusing on technique is a great way to battle through the distance," said Wiltfong. "I watched our upper classmen really come together from race one to race two and put together a cleaner, sharper, more committed race. Having two opportunities is a great chance to battle back and show what they can do. We are proud of the outcome and learning from today."

The Jayhawk Jamboree concludes K-State's fall season. The Wildcats will return in the spring for their 2022 season.
