Errors Plague Wildcats in Four-Set Loss at TCU

Oct 21, 2021 | Volleyball

FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State tallied a season-high 16 blocks, 10 coming from Kadye Fernholz, but TCU quieted the Wildcats' offense as the Frogs came away with a four-set victory Thursday night at Schollmaier Arena, 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16.

Fernholz, a sophomore middle blocker, turned in the first double-digit block performance of her career while Sydney Bolding and Aliyah Carter each added five. Carter finished with her 10th double-double of the season, as she led K-State (11-7, 2-5 Big 12) with 13 kills to pair with 10 digs.

The Wildcats and Horned Frogs (8-9, 2-5 Big 12) each produced 49 kills, however, K-State committed 13 more attacking errors (36 to 23) while also finishing with 13 service errors to TCU's seven.

The Cats were held under a .100 team hitting percentage (.091) for the second straight match, as the Frogs totaled 15 team blocks.

"I don't want to take anything away from TCU, as I thought they played exceptionally well," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "We hurt ourselves way too much in this one. We cannot make that many service or attack errors.

"Our passing and block-to-dig efforts were good enough to give us a chance, but we have to take better care of the ball."

K-State has now finished with 10 or more blocks in four consecutive matches, equaling its longest such stretch since the 2014 season. Fernholz joins Kayley Hollywood as the only Cats to reach the 10-block mark this season.

TCU turned in a team hitting percentage of .202, finishing the match with a .321 clip in the final set. Conversely, K-State hit over .200 in just one of four frames, hitting .229 in its set victory while being held to .000 in the fourth.

Bolding hit a match-high .467, putting down nine kills on 15 swings. Haley Warner added eight kills while Jayden Nembhard came off the bench to chip in seven.

The Horned Frogs' offense was paced by Taylor Raiola and her 15 kills at a .250 clip, as she added 12 digs for her double-double. Julia Adams accounted for a dozen kills while Afedo Manyang finished with eight at team-leading .312 efficiency.

Like Fernholz, Madilyn Cole produced 10 blocks on the night for TCU and Manyang was second with seven. McKenzie Nichols also ended with a double-double with her 42 assists and 10 digs.

In an opening set that held 11 tie scores and four lead changes, K-State managed a 15-11 edge in total kills. The Wildcats used a 5-2 burst to even the score at 23 before the Frogs managed to score three of the final four points, capped by a kill from Adams.

Warner led all players with five kills in the set while Carter and Bolding each added three. The Cats defense picked up six blocks in the frame, limiting TCU to a .121 efficiency. K-State committed five service errors to TCU's one.

In the second set, TCU suppressed the Wildcat offense into a -.030 hitting percentage, as K-State committed nine attacking errors against eight kills. The Frogs put down 14 kills and hit .242.

Nembhard, who came off the bench in set two, clawed the Cats within two (17-15) when she tallied back-to-back kills to go with a block to cap a four-point K-State run. TCU responded with a set-closing 8-2 stretch, which included two blocks before a kill from Manyang handed the Frogs a 2-0 advantage.

In K-State's lone set victory, Carter picked up six kills on 11 attacks (.364) to go with two blocks. Fernholz added three blocks and three kills while the offense hit a team-best .229. The Cats withstood eight tie scores and four lead changes, with a pair of Nembhard kills coming over the set's final three points.

Libero Mackenzie Morris, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, added six of her team-leading 13 digs in set three.

K-State scored the first three points of the fourth, with Loren Hinkle picking up back-to-back aces. Later, an 8-3 TCU run put the Frogs in front 13-10 and forced a Wildcat timeout. The TCU lead swelled to 20-13 with the aid of a four-point scoring burst by the Frogs.

Raiola hummed at a .778 pace, needing just nine attempts for a team-high seven kills, as she accounted for seven of her team's 12 kills in the closing set. Cole added four blocks while Nichols added three.

Bolding managed four kills on five swings to lead the K-State attack.

K-State setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi finished the match with 41 assists, four blocks and four digs.

The loss snapped the Cats' five-match winning streak against the Frogs.

The two teams wrap up the season series Friday at Schollmaier Arena at 6:30 p.m., with broadcast coverage available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Rob Voelker will have the call online at K-StateSports.com/Watch.
