Carter’s 23-Kill Night Ignites K-State’s Offense Friday Night

Oct 22, 2021 | Volleyball

FORT WORTH, Texas – A season-high 23 kills and three service aces from Aliyah Carter ignited the K-State offense Friday night, as the Wildcats picked up a four-set victory over TCU at Schollmaier Arena to earn a series split, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21.

Carter's efforts helped K-State (12-7, 3-5 Big 12) to a 58-43 edge in total kills, while the Cats hit north of .300 for the third time this season at .301. It marked Carter's fourth 20-kill performance of the season and the 10th of her career, moving her into a third-place tie on the K-State charts in the rally-scoring era.

"Significant improvement and a big bounce back match for us," said head coach Suzie Fritz after the match. "I thought our swing management was excellent. We made much better attack choices, particularly in transition.

"Additionally, we were able to upgrade our serving, which allowed us to be a lot more effective in our ability to score defensive points."

K-State reduced its error total from 36 on Thursday to just 15 Friday night, improving its hitting percentage from .091 to .301. Carter hit .327, as each of her four matches with 20 or more kills have eclipsed a .300 pace.

Carter added seven digs was one of six Wildcats to finish with at least six kills. Haley Warner was second on the team with eight, while Teana Adams-Kaonohi, Holly Bonde and Kadye Fernholz each contributed seven.

Adams-Kaonohi flirted with a triple-double with 40 assists and 10 digs to pair with a career-best seven kills. Adams-Kaonohi's career-high kill total came at a .636 pace, as the junior setter did not commit an error on 11 attacks. Fernholz ended with a .400 hitting percentage.

Junior middle blocker Sydney Bolding led all players with her season-high seven blocks. Additionally, Bolding added six kills (.308).

K-State hit .250 or better in three of the night's four sets. Conversely, TCU (8-10, 2-6 Big 12) surpassed that threshold just once. The Horned Frogs picked up 16 of their 45 kills in the opening set.

The Cats totaled 43 kills in sets 2-4 while the Frogs collected 29. Sixteen of Carter's 23 kills came in the day's final two sets alone.

Despite K-State's .308 efficiency to a .279 mark for TCU, the Frogs used a 5-2 closing run to clinch the opening set. The Wildcats committed five service errors compared to three attacking errors.

The Cats faced a deficit as large as four points before a three-point burst handed K-State its first lead of the set at 21-20. Adams-Kaonohi produced a team-high four kills to go with 11 assists.

A 9-1 run midway through the second set pushed the Wildcat lead to 11 points, 21-10. Behind three blocks, K-State forced TCU into eight errors while only allowing eight kills for a .000 hitting percentage.

Carter put down four kills to lead the Cats' offense while Bonde added three. K-State hit .250 in the frame, with just three attacking errors. The Wildcats posted just six errors through two sets while tallying 26 kills.

K-State's offense hummed at a .436 clip in the third and matched its season-high kill total in a single set with 20. Carter was responsible for nine kills while hitting .444. Bolding chipped in three kills.

The Wildcats, who never trailed in the third, put together five separate scoring runs of at least three points, including a three-point spurt to close out the frame.

Carter accounted for seven of K-State's 12 kills in the final set, which was the only set in which the Cats did not reach the .250 mark (.182). K-State was able to limit TCU to a .150 pace behind five team blocks, four coming from Bolding.

K-State finished with nine team blocks to TCU's four, marking the 16th time in which the Cats have out-blocked their opponent.

Three Wildcats reached double-figures in digs, paced by libero Mackenzie Morris' 18. Jacque Smith recorded a dozen in addition to Adams-Kaonohi's 10.

The Frogs were led by three players with 10 or more kills in Afedo Manyang (13), Julia Adams (11) and Taylor Raiola (10).

Raiola added 14 digs for her second double-double of the series.

Next up for K-State is a home midweek series with Texas Tech, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. with television coverage on ESPNU. Thursday's matchup at Bramlage Coliseum is set for a 6:30 p.m. start. Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and online at K-StateSports.com/Watch.
