Hot Second Quarter Not Enough for Wildcats

FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State was scalding from the field in the second quarter to build a halftime lead, but TCU answered with a hot effort in the third to capture a 78-67 win at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday.

K-State (5-12, 0-10 Big 12) was red-hot from the field in the second quarter, shooting 72.7 percent (8-of-11) to outscore TCU in the frame, 20-13, and captured a 34-29 lead at the half. The 72.7 percent effort from the field was the highest field goal percentage in a quarter for K-State this season.

The Wildcats took command of the second quarter with a 10-0 run to build a 29-22 lead with 4:23 to play. Ranke started the rally with a layup, followed by a contested layup by Ayoka Lee. Lee ended the night with a team-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and 6-of-7 from the foul line. Lee also pulled in six rebounds and blocked two shots.

Ranke continued to roll, knocking down a pair of free throws. Ranke finished the first half with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and six rebounds.

Lee then converted a hook shot in the lane with 5:57 to play. Laura Macke capped the run with a driving layup to force a Horned Frogs timeout.

Ranke buried her third 3-pointer with a minute-and a half to play and Macke finished another driving layup to give the Wildcats a 34-29 lead at the half.

TCU (8-9, 3-9 Big 12) came out of the locker room to outscore the Wildcats, 16-9, in the first six minutes to pull in front, 45-43, with four minutes to play in the third quarter.

K-State squared the game at 45, as Lee finished a baseline jumper with 3:35 to play. The Horned Frogs then went on a 10-2 run to build a 55-47 lead, as Aja Holmes connected on a pair of long 3-pointers and Yummy Morris finished two layups to force a K-State timeout with 1:42 to play in the frame. The Horned Frogs shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the field including a 5-of-9 from 3-point range. 

The Wildcats used a 9-3 run to pull within two, 60-58, with 6:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lee scored six of the nine points during the run. TCU scored five quick points to rebuild the lead to seven, 65-58, with 5:37 remaining in regulation.

K-State closed to within three, 70-67, as Sydney Goodson knocked down her first 3-pointer with 2:25 remaining. TCU was able to fend off the Wildcats, as Lauren Heard knocked down a jumper with 1:26 to play and later added a layup for a seven-point lead with under a minute to play. Heard led TCU with a game-high 27 points while pulling in eight rebounds and dishing out nine assists.

The Wildcats finished the night shooting 48.0 percent (24-of-50) from the field but were forced into 19 turnovers. K-State outrebounded the Horned Frogs, 34-28. The Wildcats dished out 21 assists.

TCU notched a 42.9 percent (27-of-63) performance from the field, including a 13-of-33 effort from beyond the arc.
