Hopkins Leads Cats to Sixth after Round One
Feb 14, 2021 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, Ala. – Junior Will Hopkins carded a 3-under par 69 - his best round of the season - as the K-State men's golf team is in sixth place following a first-round score of 1-under par 287 on Sunday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.
Hopkins, a product of Lincolnshire, England, is in a tie for sixth place, just two strokes out of first. Senior teammate George Clarke is two strokes behind Hopkins and in a tie for 19th after shooting 1-under par 71.
"The guys were solid today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "They did a great job of staying with the process and bouncing back after mistakes. I saw a lot of good shots out there. We just had a couple of big numbers and made a few too many bogeys. The forecast calls for some very difficult conditions the next couple days. If we stay patient and keep grinding for every shot, we will be in good shape."
Freshman Luke O'Neill carded a 1-over par 73, bouncing back from a triple bogey on the sixth hole with three birdies, and he currently sits in a tie for 34th. Graduate student Jacob Eklund is one stroke behind O'Neill at 2-over par 74 and is in a tie for 42nd.
Sophomore Riccardo Leo finished the day at 4-over par 76 and is in a tie for 64th. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender, who is competing as an individual, concluded the day at 3-over par 75 to enter the second round in a tie for 52nd.
Illinois is in first place following Sunday's first round as the Illini carded a 14-under par 274. Illinois has a five-stroke advantage over the rest of the field entering round two. Three players - Michael Feagles and Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Illinois along with Yannick Scheutz of South Alabama - are in a tie for first place at 5-under par 67.
K-State tees off for the second round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday at 7:40 a.m. Scores can be followed on golfstat.com.
