Rowing Gears Up for 2021 Season Opener with Oklahoma Scrimmage
Mar 12, 2021 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Returning to the Sooner State for the sixth-straight year, the Kansas State women's rowing team will pack its bags and travel down to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma this weekend for the Oklahoma Scrimmage, which will take place on Saturday, March 13.
K-State will take on Big 12 foe Oklahoma during Saturday's race on the Oklahoma River.
"When we are scrimmaging, we are training with different people," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "Similar to what we have done before, we will test various lengths of work pieces and pace rates. Just to practice different parts of racing. For us, we have not been on the water since November or even had a spring camp, so this will give us a chance to have different arrangements and options in the boats."
This year's scrimmage will feature two-training sessions that will allow the Wildcats to get out on the water for the first time since the fall. Besides the actual competition, the focus for K-State on Saturday will be centered on technique and different seating assignments, as the group looks to prepare itself for postseason races in May.
"We want to see what we got," said Sweeney. "We are at the point to see what combinations we need to work on before getting into the actual racing slate. Moving people from one boat to another and which people work best with others is what we want to see right now as well."
Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Wildcats will travel four boats to each of the six races this season. This factor will test K-State for the spring season, which makes Saturday's run-through even more vital for determining certain crews on the water.
After a successful 2019 campaign that featured a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championship and a 22-0 sweep over Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown, K-State's 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden halt from the 2020 season is something Sweeney thinks his team can move forward from.
"We lost a few seniors who graduated or got jobs now and have moved on with their life," said Sweeney. "This is a new team, some of them are brand new to the sport. Some of them are kids who never got a chance to race before. At the same time, this is a new team with a chance to produce their own identity. A new generation of kids coming through."
Stay tuned for live updates on Twitter throughout the day. A full recap of the event in Oklahoma City will be made available on kstatesports.com following the scrimmage.
