K-State Concludes Successful Outing at Oklahoma Scrimmage

Mar 13, 2021 | Rowing

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Kansas State women's rowing team kicked off the 2021 spring campaign with a successful run-through at the Oklahoma Scrimmage on Saturday (March 13), as the Wildcats competed against Big 12 foe Oklahoma for the sixth-straight year.

K-State powered through two training sessions on Saturday, with the first session focused on speed work and sharpening the athletes towards competition pieces on the water. The latter session highlighted low rate, high power work which translated to distance routines as the day continued.

"It was good to get on the water," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "I'm pleased with where the boats are at. We have work to do going forward, but we have established a solid baseline."

It had a been a while since the Wildcats had competed against another opponent, as the team got to practice out on the water for the first time since the fall. But from Sweeney's perspective, getting back into the rhythm of things was not a problem.

"Our team proved they are fit enough to have a successful season," said Sweeney.

With a bevy of newcomers, the Wildcats focused on getting their younger athletes acclimated to the water, as the Oklahoma Scrimmage allows the team to nail down different seating assignments for future regattas.

"Right now, we need to focus on water time to build up technique," Sweeney stated.

The scrimmage provided insight into who can be versatile on the water, which plays an important role for the team's abilities to tinker with lineups and boat strategies over the course of a rigorous schedule. As the Wildcats move ahead, the team can use the scrimmage as a solid foundation when refining technique.

"Our athletes have worked hard and now we want that power to be as effective as possible," said Sweeney.

The spring schedule picks back up in two weeks for the Wildcats in Omaha, Nebraska with the Creighton Duel on Saturday, March 27.
