Lee, Goodson Combine for 55 at Oklahoma on Sunday

Mar 07, 2021 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Oklahoma – Despite a combined 55 points from Ayoka Lee and Sydney Goodson on Sunday afternoon at Oklahoma, the Sooners broke open a tied game with a red-hot fourth quarter to secure a 90-81 win over the Wildcats at Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday in the regular season finale for both teams.

The 55 combined points by Lee and Goodson ranks tied for sixth in school history for combined points among two K-State teammates. This is the second straight season a K-State duo combined for 55 points at Oklahoma, as Peyton Williams (31) and Lee (24) achieved the mark on February 16, 2020.

Lee scored a game-high 33 points on 16-of-18 shooting, while pulling in 13 rebounds including eight offensive boards. This was Lee's 27th career double-double, tying her for fifth in school history for career double-doubles.

The All-America candidate set the school records for single-game field goal percentage (minimum 15 field goal attempts) and for field goal percentage in a conference game, as she ended the game against the Sooners shooting 88.9 percent. Her 16 made field goals are a new career-high, the most in a conference game in school history and the fourth-most for all games.

This was Lee's third game with 30 or more points this season and in her career. She is just the second player in the history of the program to score 30 or more points three or more times in a season, joining Brittany Chambers (2012-13; four) as the only other player to achieve the feat. She is the eighth player in K-State history with three or more career games with 30 or more points.

Goodson came off the bench to register a career-high 22 points, aided by a career-high six connections from beyond the arc. The six 3-point field goals made by Goodson were the most from a Wildcat since Rachel Ranke made eight at Oklahoma on February 10, 2019.

K-State (8-17, 3-15 Big 12) trailed by one at halftime, 39-38, with the help of 31 combined points in the first half from Lee and Goodson. Lee tallied 17 points, including K-State's final nine points of the second quarter. Goodson sparked the Wildcats off the bench with 14 points including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats won the third quarter, 20-19, to square the game at 58 entering the fourth quarter. Lee scored 10 of K-State's 20 points in the third frame.

Oklahoma (12-11, 9-9 Big 12) shot a blistering 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the field in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wildcats, 32-23. The Sooners were 10-of-10 on two-point attempts in the final stanza. The 86.7 percent effort in the fourth quarter was the highest allowed by K-State for an opponent quarter this season.

The Sooners took a five-point lead, 63-58, with 9:05 to play in the fourth quarter. K-State closed the gap to one-point twice, as Ranke connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Lee made a layup.

Oklahoma broke open the game with a 14-3 run over a three-minute stretch to build an 85-71 lead with 3:01 remaining. Gabby Gregory recorded seven of the 14 points during the run. Gregory finished the afternoon with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists.

K-State shot a season-high 50.0 percent (34-of-68) from the field, which was boosted by a 64.3 percent effort (9-of-14) in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats shot 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from 3-point range. The Wildcats held a 34-28 edge on the glass.

Oklahoma shot 59.7 percent (37-of-62) from the field, which was the highest field goal percentage surrendered by K-State this season. The Sooners were held to 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc, but were 9-of-10 from the foul line.

K-State will now prepare for the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships. The Wildcats are slated as the 10th seed and will face seventh-seeded Texas Tech on Thursday at 8 p.m., in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium.

Thursday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and will be available on the K-State Sports Network, free at kstatesports.com, and on the K-State Sports app.
