K-State Claims Fourth at Spartan Collegiate
Mar 09, 2021 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Kansas State men's golf team followed up a strong second round with another quality round on Tuesday during the final 18 holes to finish fourth in the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island, held at the par-72, 7,060-yard Plantation Course.
The Wildcats, who came into the day in a tie for sixth, tallied a 4-under par 284 on the day. After a hot start that included 11 birdies through the first six holes and at one point in a tie for first, K-State cooled down and finished 5-under par 859 for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Ohio State, Michigan State and Northwestern. The Wildcats finished five strokes back of the third-place team, No. 47 Georgia Southern.
"I thought we played really solid all week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a hot start today and had our chances coming down the stretch, but unfortunately we missed a few short putts that kind of killed our momentum. Overall, it was a great experience for our young team. It was nice to get in contention on the final nine, and I know it's going to help us continue to grow and develop. I was really pleased with the performance of Tim and Luke. They are a couple of young guys that have a ton of potential."
Sophomore Tim Tillmanns finished in a tie for sixth due in large part to consecutive birdies in his final two holes. His 4-under par 68 during Tuesday's final round tied for the third-best score on the day. The Cologne, Germany product tallied his third top-10 finish of the year - a team high - after carding 4-under par 212 for the tournament. Freshman Luke O'Neill shot a 2-under par 70 during the final round, finishing at 2-under par 214 over 54 holes to tie for 12th, the best finish of his young career.
Sophomore Riccardo Leo finished in a tie for 23rd after shooting 1-over par 217, while both junior Will Hopkins and senior George Clarke finished one stroke behind Leo at 2-over par 218, and in a tie for 30th.
The Iowa Hawkeyes captured the Spartan Collegiate after shooting an 11-under par 277 on Tuesday and edging out No. 39 Notre Dame by one stroke. Mac McClear of the Hawkeyes used a tournament low 7-under par 65 to claim the individual crown, three strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
K-State will have a quick turnaround, as the Wildcats head to Austin, Texas next week to compete in the George Hannon Collegiate held at the UT Golf Club.
