Wildcats Walk-Off in Opener, Split Doubleheader with OU
Apr 17, 2021 | Baseball
In the series opener, Jordan Wicks allowed just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings of work. Phillips' game-winning hit scored Blake Burrows, who began the 10th with a walk, to hand K-State (20-15, 3-8 Big 12) its second walk-off victory of the season.
Oklahoma (19-16, 4-7 Big 12) had tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth via an RBI groundout by Conor McKenna.
Wildcat reliever Tyler Eckberg retired all six he faced over the final two frames to secure the win, including a strikeout to end the top of the 10th.
"It felt great because it was a great win," said head coach Pete Hughes. "We got a great pitching performance game one. Guys kept their composure. Got a big hit, walk-off at home. Then you're right back at it 45 minutes later and we're playing catch-up most of the game."
In the day's finale, the Sooners raced out to a 6-0 lead after four innings. The Cats responded with a four-run fifth and later had the game-winning run at first base in the bottom of the ninth inning.
"The only thing you want to do is have your kids keep fighting like crazy and not look at the scoreboard," Hughes added. "I'm really proud of our guys that were down 6-0 and kept battling and then gave ourselves a chance against one of the best closers in the country to win a ballgame in the ninth."
Phillips, who went 3-for-5 in the first game, came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and the Cats trailing by two, 6-4. The sophomore worked a full count against OU closer Jason Ruffcorn but was unable to deliver his second walk-off hit of the day.
"That's how I would've dialed it up," Hughes said. "He did it for us in the first game. I hope he's up there tomorrow in that same situation, because the kid works his butt off every day to be in that situation and have a competitive at-bat – and that was a competitive at-bat. Got the count to 3-2. I hope he's in that situation tomorrow for us. He's the right guy in that spot."
Ruffcorn struck out four in his 1 2/3 innings, collecting his fourth save of the season.
Dylan Caplinger's first career home run sparked the Cats' four-run fifth and marked K-State's first hit off Oklahoma starter Braden Carmichael. Cameron Uselton added an RBI double and Nick Goodwin's RBI single ended the day for Carmichael, as the Wildcats registered four hits in the inning.
Uselton recorded a hit and an RBI in each game, as his two-run single in the fifth inning put K-State ahead 2-1 in game one. Uselton's go-ahead hit came in the inning after OU took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single by Tanner Tredaway off Wicks.
After Tredaway's hit, Wicks sat down seven of the last eight he faced as he matched his season-long outing. The sophomore lefty yielded just one hit over his first four innings and produced his fourth quality outing in nine starts.
"There wasn't much barrel contact," Hughes said of Wicks' outing. "I think there was one quality barrel hit off him, and that team's leading the conference in hitting. His stuff was really good today. His fastball command was outstanding. He had a good feel for all four of his pitches."
Three different Sooners homered off game two starter Carson Seymour. Seymour suffered the loss after giving up six earned runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The K-State bullpen held Oklahoma scoreless over the next 5 2/3 innings. Caleb Littlejim and Eric Torres limited the Sooners to a pair of hits while the duo struck out seven. Torres retired all nine he saw, including five strikeouts.
In two games, Wildcat relievers combined to allow just three hits over 8 2/3 innings while striking out eight and walking three.
Caplinger turned in K-State's only multi-hit game of the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Zach Kokoska went 1-for-4 in each contest and pushed his career-long on-base streak to 31 games. Kokoska has also hit safely in 13 consecutive games.
The Wildcats and Sooners wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. The series finale will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on the K-State Sports Radio Network with live, free audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
