HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team finished in eighth place in the 2021 Big 12 Championship following Wednesday's fourth and final round at the par-70, 7,068-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The Wildcats tallied 6-over par 286 during the final 18 to finish the championship at 54-over par 1,174. K-State was 13 strokes ahead of ninth-place West Virginia and 11 strokes shy of seventh-place Kansas.
"I'm really proud of how they guys competed this week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "They gave it everything they had, and that's all you can ask for. Today we got off to a good start, but midway through the round we made a couple of bogeys on the par-5 17th that kind of halted our momentum.
"I think our inexperience was definitely a factor this week," Robbins continued. "If you look at our team, we are very young with four of our top six guys being freshmen in terms of eligibility, and this was the first time they've competed in a Big 12 Championship. I've seen a lot of growth with this group, and I'm very excited about the future. Hopefully we get into the NCAA's and keep the season going."
Sophomore Riccardo Leo and freshman Luke O'Neill led the Wildcats by finishing in a tie for 29th at 14-over par 294. Leo's final-round score of even-par 70 helped him climb up one spot on the leaderboard, while O'Neill's 3-over par 73 final round dropped him nine spots.
Sophomore Tim Tillmanns put together his second-straight quality round, carding even-par 70 to finish one stroke behind Leo and O'Neill at 15-over par 295. Tillmanns, who moved up 13 spots over the final two days, tied for 32nd.
Junior Will Hopkins finished in a tie for 42nd at 18-over par 298, while graduate student Jacob Eklund tallied 21-over par 301, tying him for 45th to end his decorated K-State career.
No. 3 Oklahoma State won the 2021 Big 12 Championship, outdueling No.1 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas to claim its second-straight title. The Cowboys finished with a total of 9-over par 1,129, one stroke ahead of the Sooners and two shots better than the Longhorns. Texas' Cole Hammer claimed the individual crown, shooting 4-under par 276 to edge a two-way tie for second by one stroke.
The Wildcats will now turn their attention to the 2021 NCAA Selection Show, which will be next Wednesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. (CT) on Golf Channel.
