Excessive Weather Cuts K-State’s Outing at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster Short

COLLEGE STATION, Texas. – Due to inclement weather, the Kansas State track and field teams had to cut their day short at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster on Saturday (May 1) afternoon at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
It was a promising day for the Wildcats down in College Station, who had already collected five top-three medals in the field, all coming from the hammer throw, javelin, and long jump competitions.
"Hammers overall were alright," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Some good, some hoped for better, but not disappointed."
For a moment in the women's hammer throw, senior Helene Ingvaldsen was on her way to owning the meet record with her toss of 63.09m/207. However, Rice's Tara Simpson-Sullivan unleashed a mammoth throw of 64.36m/211-2 on her fourth attempt, which gave her the win and the meet record at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Seniors Shaelyn Ward (3rd, 60.17m/197-05) and Ashley Petr (4th, 59.09m/193-10) turned in admirable performances behind Ingvaldsen to seal spots in the top five of the hammer throw.
Freshman juggernaut Kade McCall did his part to keep the train rolling on the men's side, launching a throw of 62.40m/204-9 to clinch the runner-up spot in the hammer throw event for K-State.
Another spectacle for the Wildcats in the field came from the All-American duo of Taishia Pryce and Chantoba Bright in the long jump. Both Pryce and Bright reeled in top-three finishes, as Pryce flew across the sand box to record a mark of 6.32m/20-9 – earning her a spot at second overall – while Bright displayed great form in her third-place outing with a leap of 6.11m/20-5.
"Long jumps in the rain were solid," Rovelto stated.
Freshman Luke Ralston got the nod in the men's javelin contest today, and showcased a ton of power, as he fired a throw of 56.69m/186 to score a spot at ninth overall.
The women's javelin competition featured freshman Baylee Unruh, who notched a personal best throw of 42.98m/141, which helped her acquire a fifth-place performance.
"Baylee had a PR in the javelin," said Rovelto.
K-State also finished out its time in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday afternoon, competing in the women's pole vault and 4x400 meter relay at the Rock Chalk Classic.
Freshman Reagan Hukill vaulted her way into the school record books, as the Southlake, Texas, native used a mark of 3.66m/12-00.00 to place herself in a tie for eighth all-time in the pole vault event.
Keeping up with Hukill in the pole vault was her counterpart – sophomore Jessica Williams – who surged over the bar at 3.66m/12-00.00 to finish in 11th place.
The last event of the Rock Chalk Classic for the Wildcats occurred in the 4x400 meter relay, where the quartet of junior Alex Ferguson, freshman Sydney Burton, junior Kassidy Johnson and freshman Delaney Kemp finished in seventh place at a time of 3:57.04.
The Wildcats now return to the Sunflower State for their first home meet of the 2021 outdoor season – the Ward Haylett Invitational – on May 7-8 at R.V. Christian Track and Field Complex. K-State will honor its senior classes from the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns next weekend.
"Next week is very important for us, given how many did not get to compete," Rovelto said.
