K-State Wraps Up Ward Haylett Invitational with Senior Day Festivities

May 08, 2021 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan.  – It was an eventful day for the Kansas State track and field teams at the Ward Haylett Invitational on Saturday (May 8) afternoon, where both men's and women's groups flourished on the final day of the meet while commemorating its 17 seniors for the 2020-21 campaign.

"There were a number of PRs or near PRs, so it appears most are in good position entering next week," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Generally, we had good conditions, which is fortunate given some of the weather we have had in recent meets."

"I'm super glad it was a nice day for the seniors. They collectively have contributed a great deal to K-State, and we are very appreciative of their efforts and experiences they have provided over their years in our program."

Those 17 seniors who have made an impact on and off the track over the past 4-5 years includes Kimisha Chambers, Justin Davis, Colin Echols, Akia Guerrier, Travis Hodge, Cayli Hume, Helene Ingvaldsen, Cameron Lewis, Ariel Okorie, Kyle Parr, Ashley Petr, Konstantina Romaiou, Jah Strange, Lauren Taubert, Jullane Walker, Shaelyn Ward and Logan Wolfley.

Davis – a 400-meter specialist during his time at K-State – gave his input on this year's senior class.

"It's very special," said Davis. "For a lot of us, we came here and didn't know each other. Each year we get closer and closer. I've been watching our progression since day one and it's a really good feeling. Even outside of track, we all are going to head off and be successful with our degrees. It's going to sink in about what we were able to do on the track and in school."

K-State completed its three days of field events on Saturday morning, and a few athletes stood out among the crowd. High jumper Kyle Alcine notched a new personal record of 2.15m/7-00.50 and secured a spot in second place behind Olympic medalist Erik Kynard (2.20m/7-02.50), who competed as a member of Jordan Brand.

Petr continued her dominance in the women's discus, as she flung a throw of 55.87m/183-04 to clinch the win on Senior Day.

The men's and women's shot put events were combined inside the Mark A. Chapman Shot Put area, and there were a number of quality performances. Junior All-American Taylor Latimer claimed top honors in the women's shot put with a toss of 16.50m/54-01.75 and junior Cameron Lewis collected the men's title with a mark of 18.12m/59.05.50.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Chambers (1st, 13.18) and Taubert (3rd, 13.47) set new personal records in the second heat of the race, respectively.

A few Wildcats ran well in the 100 meters, as Guerrier (2nd, 12.16) and freshman Darian Clarke (1st, 10.69) each sped down the track to put K-State in top two positions for both races.

Clarke brought his energy over from the 100 meters in his next victory – the 200 meters – where he posted a new personal time of 21.63 to hold off teammates – Parker McCafferty (3rd, 22.32) and Nate Hassed (4th, 22.69).

Sophomore Donovan Turner exploded out of the gates and finished the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.49 seconds, which gave him the top spot in the event.

Another underclassman stormed through the track en route to a personal-best mark, as freshman Delaney Kemp recorded a time of 2:13.21 in the 800 meters to earn the victory.

The men's 800 meters featured a solid run by freshman Kyle Johnston, who paced himself to the third overall spot with a time of 1:57.79.

Romaiou finished out the Wildcats' home meet in the triple jump, where she leapt to the top of the standings with a mark of 13.06m/42-10.25.

As the Ward Haylett Invitational comes to an end, the Wildcats will now send out their best performers in next week's Big 12 Outdoor Championship, which will be held at R.V. Christian Track and Field Complex from May 14-16. This will be the first conference championship that K-State will host since the 2012 outdoor season.

Single-day tickets for the Big 12 Championships are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, senior citizen and K-State students and will go on sale Monday at www.kstatesports.com/buytickets. Fans will be issued a digital ticket (print at home or mobile) and they can scan in and out throughout the day using their mobile ticket.
