K-State Tests Fifth-Ranked Cornhuskers Saturday, Falls in Four Sets
Aug 28, 2021 | Volleyball
LINCOLN, Neb. – K-State pushed fifth-ranked Nebraska to four sets in the finale of the Husker Invitational Saturday, getting 14 kills and 16 digs from Aliyah Carter before the Cornhuskers prevailed, 25-17, 27-25, 11-25, 25-22, in front of a crowd of 7,952 at Devaney Center.
Carter logged a double-double for the second straight match, carding a career-best 16 digs with eight coming in the Wildcats' wire-to-wire third set victory. Haley Warner added 11 kills at a .556 clip and Holly Bonde produced a dozen.
"I thought we were significantly better today than we were yesterday," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "Our focus right now is on improvement. I thought we handled a difficult environment really well. We were able to withstand some of the ebbs and flows that come in an environment like that and against a team like that. I think there were far more positives than negatives with the exception of the final outcome."
After a second set that held 20 tie scores and seven lead changes, K-State (1-1) raced out to a 19-5 lead in the third. Behind the serve of setter Teana Adams-Kaonohi, the Cats rattled off 12 consecutive points, a run that included four kills from Warner and two by Bonde.
The offense hummed at a .556 clip, racking up 15 kills without an error on 27 attacks, while the defense forced Nebraska (2-0) into seven errors against nine kills (.054) behind 18 digs and three blocks. Libero Mackenzie Morris picked up six of her team-best 19 digs in the third.
The Huskers' 11 points marked their lowest in a single set at Devaney Center, which opened in 2013.
"Our serve-and-pass effort in games two and three was really good and our transition game was good," Fritz added. "We were getting productive touches at the net, our dig effort was really good and we were able to convert points in transition. We separated ourselves in those areas at that point. Our serving was really good. Teana stayed back there for a really long time and that generally does not happen, especially against a really good volleyball team."
Looking to push the match to a fifth set, K-State led by as many as six points in the fourth set at 15-9. NU took its final lead, 19-18, after scoring nine of the next 12 points. The Cats clawed within a single point four times before back-to-back kills from Callie Schwarzenbach and Lindsay Krause ended the match.
Krause finished the day with 12 kills for the Cornhuskers while Kayla Caffey and Madi Kubik led the team with 13 apiece. Caffey hit a match-high .632 and setter Kennedi Orr produced a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.
Nebraska held a 55-49 edge in total kills while K-State owned a 65-64 lead in digs. The Huskers hit .224 while the Cats produced a .196 team efficiency.
K-State did finish with five more blocks, 10.5 to 5.5, led by five from Kadye Fernholz. Kayley Hollywood pitched in four blocks while Adams-Kaonohi, Bonde and Warner each ended with three.
Following an early 3-2 K-State lead in the opening set, the Huskers used a 9-2 run, including six unanswered points, to open up a 9-4 advantage. The Cats clawed within two points at 16-14 before a seven-point burst from Nebraska created a nine-point gap.
Bonde and Carter each logged three kills, as the duo accounted for six of K-State's eight in the set. The Wildcat defense managed just one team block, as Nebraska recorded 14 kills with two errors for a .462 clip. Krause led NU with five kills on eight swings without committing an error.
Neither side was able to manage a lead larger than two points in the second set. K-State put together a late 3-1 run to even the score at 24, fighting off set point in the process, before back-to-back kills by Krause handed the Huskers a two-set lead.
The Wildcat defense went on to tally 4.5 team blocks in limiting Nebraska's hitting percentage to .188. Bonde recorded three total blocks, including a solo stuff, and Fernholz added a pair of block assists. K-State picked up 11 kills, with three coming from Fernholz on four swings.
Husker libero Lexi Rodriguez paced all players with 21 digs. Lexi Sun added 11 kills and Schwarzenbach led her team with three block assists.
Fernholz hit .333 with six kills against just one error on 15 swings while adding seven digs.
K-State travels west to compete in the Gaucho Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The Wildcats will face Pepperdine on Friday before concluding the weekend Saturday against UCSB and San Diego State.
