Carter, Nembhard Power K-State to Sweep at Mizzou
Sep 14, 2021 | Volleyball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – K-State got 17 kills from Jayden Nembhard and 16 more from Aliyah Carter, as the Wildcats extended their winning streak to six matches with a sweep of former conference rival Missouri Tuesday at Hearnes Center, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20.
Nembhard's kill total led all players and marked a new season high, coming at a .324 efficiency. Carter hit a season-best .433 and added five digs and five blocks. Teana Adams-Kaonohi carded a double-double, dishing out 35 assists to go with 11 digs.
"The rhythm to our first-swing offense was good today," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "There's a lot of connected things that go into it: it's quality passing, there's rhythm, there's tempo and timing. They all have to come together to be effective. In the first two games, they were pretty good. A lot of it was because we were passing so well. That starts that offensive momentum."
Carter and Nembhard were responsible for 33 of K-State's (7-2) 46 kills while Missouri (2-8) totaled just 32 kills as a team. The Cats' offense hit over .370 in each of the first two sets and finished the match with a .284 hitting percentage to the Tigers' .140.
"I thought the connection between Teana and Jayden and Aliyah tonight felt really good," added Fritz. "So when we are in system, it felt as it should be. But then when we were out of system, I thought they did a nice of not hurting themselves and managing their swings. When you can generate kill production when you're out of system, you can be pretty hard to stop."
Adams-Kaonohi's double-double was her second of the season, both coming over the last three matches. Her 11 digs led all players and she now has five career double-doubles.
Carter (6), Nembhard (5) and Haley Warner (4) combined for 15 of K-State's 16 first-set kills while the offense hummed at a .375 pace. The Cats opened a four-point lead at 21-17, the largest for either side in the frame, after scoring seven of nine points after trailing 15-14. The teams traded three-point runs before a kill from Nembhard put an end to the set.
Carter and Kadye Fernholz teamed up for three of the Wildcats' four blocks in set one, holding MU to a .229 hitting percentage.
Leading by a single point late in the second, 19-18, the Cats managed a two-set lead behind a 6-2 closing run. The burst included back-to-back aces from Loren Hinkle and consecutive kills from Carter and Warner.
Nembhard picked up seven of her 17 kills in the set, hitting .500 in the frame. Hinkle ended the day with a career-high four service aces.
Despite hitting .114 in the third set, K-State never trailed in finishing its second sweep of the season. The Cat defense forced Mizzou into as many errors as kills (7) behind three team blocks and 17 digs.
The Tigers climbed within a point at 19-18 before K-State rattled off six of the next seven points, capped by Hinkle's fourth service ace. Carter put down six kills while Nembhard added five, as the duo combined for 11 of the team's 13 kills in the third.
Fernholz finished with five blocks and Kayley Hollywood chipped in three. K-State registered eight blocks to Missouri's five, marking the ninth straight match the Wildcats have out-blocked their opponent.
Libero Mackenzie Morris tallied nine digs while Hinkle and Jacque Smith both pitched in five.
The Tigers were led by 13 kills from Anna Dixon at a .267 efficiency. Dixon picked up eight of those kills in the first set on a dozen attacks. Jordan Iliff totaled seven kills for Missouri, whose losing streak now sits at four matches.
Tuesday's matchup marked the first meeting between the former conference foes since 2011, the Tigers' final year in the Big 12.
K-State wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule at the Omaha Challenge. The Cats will take on Weber State on Friday before facing host Omaha on Saturday. Both matches will stream live on Mavs All-Access at OMavs.com. Radio coverage is also available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
