20-Kill Outings from Carter, Nembhard Push K-State Past Weber State

Sep 17, 2021 | Volleyball

OMAHA, Neb. – Season-high kill totals from both Aliyah Carter (22) and Jayden Nembhard (20) to go with a double-double from Teana Adams-Kaonohi pushed K-State to a four-set victory over Weber State Friday, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23, at Baxter Arena at the Omaha Challenge.

Carter's match-best 22 kills came at a .422 clip, as she added 16 digs to card her fifth double-double of the season. With 51 assists and 13 digs, Adams-Kaonohi turned in her third double-double in the last four contests as K-State (8-2) extended its winning streak to seven matches.

"In the end we won the match by four points total, from start to finish," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "When you get down to those 25-23 types of matches, the difference is in the details. I thought our serving was exceptional and was probably the difference between winning and losing in that particular match. We found a way to win a lot of the long rallies. I think Weber State is a really good volleyball team. They play well over time, but they can frustrate you pretty fast. They're a capable serving team, as well, but I feel like we won that battle.

"Carter had another good day and Jayden, too, we were pretty good on the left. Defensively, I thought we were pretty on task, as well. Probably not our very best effort, but in the end found a way to win."

Carter, a sophomore, committed just three attacking errors on 45 attempts on her way to her third 20-kill outing of the season and ninth of her career. Her nine 20-kill performances move her into a tie for fourth place on K-State's all-time list (rally-scoring era).

Nembhard's 20 kills marked the second time she has eclipsed the 20-kill plateau. The product of Keller, Texas, hit .214 and added six digs.

K-State owned a 63-50 edge in total kills while hitting .240 to Weber State's .195. K-State held the advantage in assists (61-46), digs (86-73) and blocks (8-6).

Libero Mackenzie Morris served up three of the Wildcats' eight aces while equaling her career high with 24 digs. Senior Jacque Smith logged a season-best 17 digs with one ace.

In her first start of the season, junior middle blocker Sydney Bolding led the Cats with five blocks and added two service aces.

Adams-Kaonohi picked up four blocks and Kayley Hollywood chipped in three to help K-State out-block its opponent for the 10th straight contest.

The opening set saw six tie scores, with the final tie coming at 23-23 before Weber State (5-5) scored back-to-back points to close the frame. K-State trailed by as many as four points in the set, and trailed late at 23-20 before tying the score.

Nembhard (6) and Carter (5) combined for 11 of the team's 16 kills in the first set. On the other side of the net, Rylin Adams' six kills and Emma Mangum's five accounted for 11 of WSU's 15 kills.

K-State produced six more kills than Weber State, getting seven from Carter in leveling the match at a set apiece. Carter needed just 12 swings and she added five digs. K-State led 22-21 before getting two kills from Holly Bonde and one from Carter over the final three points.

Bonde, who came off the bench in set two, finished with seven kills at a .263 efficiency.

K-State led throughout the third and created a lead as large as five points behind seven more kills from Carter, who did not commit an error on 17 attacks. WSU fought off three set-point tries from K-State, only to see Nembhard slam home a set-ending kill and give the Cats a 2-1 advantage.

Nembhard paced the K-State offense in the final set, putting down eight kills and hitting .273. Morris recorded 10 digs and Smith eight, helping K-State to 31 in the set. Weber State hit a match-low .170 with just 11 kills to K-State's 18.

K-State put together scoring funs of five, four and three consecutive points in sealing its seventh straight victory.

The seven-match winning streak marks the team's longest since eight in a row during the 2018 season.

WSU, the preseason favorite in the Big Sky Conference, was led by Adams with 16 kills. Dani Nay added 14 while hitting .316 with 16 digs.

Libero Makayla Sorensen tallied 22 digs and setter Kate Standifird finished with a double-double with 41 assists and 14 digs.

K-State faces host Omaha to conclude the Omaha Challenge Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will stream live on Mavs All-Access at OMavs.com with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
