K-State With Work to Do in Oklahoma
Sep 26, 2021 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – It wasn't the start that the Kansas State women's golf team envisioned as the Wildcats currently sit in 14th place after the first 36 holes of the Schooner Fall Classic on Sunday.
Â
K-State finished the day 32-over par 592 at the par-70, 6,109-yard Belmar Golf Club. The Wildcats recorded a 19-over par 299 round one and followed it with a 13-over par 293 round two.Â
Â
"No excuses, we have to be better," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We gave away too many shots in the native grass."
Â
Remington Isaac continues to be the top performer for the Wildcats. The freshman is tied for 24th place after carding a 4-over par 144. She will hope for a good final round on Monday as she is in contention for her second-career top-20 finish.Â
Â
Heather Fortushniak, a senior, shot 9-over par 149 on Sunday, good for a tie in 53rd place.
Â
Haley Vargas is in a tie for 60th place after 36 holes, but the junior had a promising round two. She carded a 3-over par 73 in the second 18 to bring her current total to 11-over par 151.
Â
Rounding out the scoring lineup for Kansas State is sophomore Gabriela McNelly and junior Manon Donche-Gay, who are tied for 69th with a score of 14-over par 154.
Â
"The effort is there for sure," Knight said. "I'm proud of how they carry themselves. It's our execution that must improve."
Â
Ranked third in the nation according to Golfweek, Oklahoma State quickly took a commanding lead after two rounds. The Cowgirls carded an 11-under par 549 over the first 36 holes, and they hold an 18-stroke lead over the second-place team, Illinois. OSU was led by Caley McGinty, who is atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under par 134 and takes a four-shot lead into Monday's final round.
Â
K-State will get the chance to finish on a positive note as the final round in Norman is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
