Jan 26, 2022 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After staying in Manhattan last weekend, the Kansas State track and field team will hit the road to Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Open and Multis on Friday (January 28) and Saturday (January 29).
Competition will begin on Friday with the men's heptathlon 60-meter dash at 10:30 a.m., CT and on Saturday at 10 a.m., CT with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles and women's shot put.
"We have a smaller group going this weekend," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Horizontal jumps, throws, high jump and pole vault athletes along with a small group of sprinters. The competition will be very good in all events we are contesting. We are still missing come folks due to COVID-19 and injuries and this will probably continue all year. Some of the injuries are due to missed preparation due to missed time from COVID. Kind of a vicious cycle. We just have to manage as best we can. Training seems to be going well this those who have been able to be consistent due to little or no missed time."
At the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on Friday (January 21) and Saturday (January 22), the Wildcats posted several notable performances, along with two meet records, including junior Kassidy Johnson in the Women's 1 Mile and junior Shalysa Wray in the Women's 300 Meters.
Johnson and fellow junior Hannah Stewart each ran the Women's 1 Mile under the meet record time, with Johnson taking home the new record with a time of 4:47.92 to finish first to Stewart's second-place mark of 4:50.26. The previous record was 4:53.30 by K-State's Annie Wetterhusin in 1999. Wray won the event with a time of 38.21 seconds, over 2 seconds better than the previous record of 40.36 seconds. That mark was originally set by Leno Guion-Firmin of Tulsa in 2011 before K-State's Sophia Alonso tied it a year later.
Other impressive performances from the DeLoss Dodds Invitational included junior Urte Bacianskaite winning the Austra Skujyte Women's Pentathlon wire-to-wire with a personal-best total of 3,622 points. She won or tied four events, taking home the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.18, the shot put with a mark of 13.78m/45-2.50 and the long jump at 5.32m/17-5.5, while she tied for first in the high jump at 1.64m/5-4.50.
Freshman Kavian Kerr won the Men's 60 Meters with a time of 6.85 second, just 0.02 seconds shy of tying his personal best. In the Women's 400 Meters, senior Alex Ferguson won the event with a run of 56.95 seconds, while junior O'Shalia Johnson won the Women's 600 Yards with a time of 1:25.92.
In his first competition as a track and field athlete, senior Cameron Key won the Wince Parrette Men's Triple Jump with a leap of 12.30m/46-7.25 on his first attempt, bettering Oral Roberts' Kemuel Sloan by 0.04 meters.
