Wildcats Roll Past Mountaineers in Home Sweep

Nov 10, 2022 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State cut a three-match home slide Thursday with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) sweep over West Virginia at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State (14-11, 5-7 Big 12) were led offensively by outside hitter Elena Baka and middle blocker Kayde Fernholz with six kills apiece. Fernholz and senior Haley Warner led both teams at a .333 clip as Warner picked up five kills and Fernolz tallied seven blocks.

Senior Sydney Bolding also collected five kills and added four aces to her point total (10). On the defensive end, libero Mackenzie Morris drummed up a match-high 15 digs from the back line. Junior Aliyah Carter collected six digs as setter Loren Hinkle posted a 22-assist night.

West Virginia (7-18, 0-12 Big 12) could not pick up its first Big 12 win. The Mountaineers put together 27 kills at a .010 hitting percentage. Freshman Bailey Miller paced the team with seven kills and a .125 clip. Outside hitter Adrian Ell chimed in five kills and 12 assists for WVU.

Libero Skye Stokes inked one of the three Mountaineer service aces and donned 13 digs in the process. Freshman middle blocker Melanie McGann tallied five kills and five blocks at the net.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
Head coach Suzie Fritz

Overall thoughts from the match…
"The two areas that we did the best were serving and blocking. We felt like we were on task and getting good touches on the ball while creating havoc at the net. This was not our best offensive night, but we were good enough defensively to offset that and get the win."

On Mackenzie Morris' performance…
"She is wonderfully consistent. Consistency is not flashy, but that is what we love about her. What she does in a match is what she does every day. Itt is hard for an athlete to bring the same level of energy, execution, and effort into day-to-day work. That is what makes her really special."

On the team's serving push…
"We did what we do. Serving is a strength for this team as they have invested time and value into it. They stayed aggressive. As the natural momentum flows of the match develop, it is easy to get conservative in serving. We stayed the course."
