FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening Statement...
"Well really good first half, and really bad second half, not a lot of middle area. I thought our defense was atrocious in the second half. Really, I think the margin probably hurt us in the sense that we really lost a lot of focus and and really had trouble getting it back. Credit to Utah Tech for continuing to play and they're a dangerous team. They can make some threes and they can make them in a hurry. We knew that, and so yeah, it was a really nice Sunday afternoon and not so nice the last 30 minutes or so."
On what changed in the offense today…
"Well, the press really got us going. I think we had good flow there and we had a really open chord and Gabby got off to a great start really hot. But we were really, really playing I think in kind of a free flowing. The game got bogged down in the third quarter and the fourth and there was, you know, just we lost focus. We were doing things that were really uncharacteristic of our group. And then you know, they went zone, and we haven't played a lot of zone, but I think we settled it. At times Gabby got cooled off because she spent some time on the bench with foul trouble. She got cooled off a little bit and had some trouble getting it back and we didn't find each other very easily. At that point, it was really hard to score. I didn't want to go back in the press. Maybe I should have. I did feel like we did play a little better in a set defense, but we didn't. And then, you know, we just really lost focus, they can probably answer a little bit better about the whys. I'd be curious about their answers as well."
On the positives of the game…
" I would say the positive sides here real quick. I thought Eliza Maupin had a fantastic game. She came back in, didn't get off to a great start, she said she was really tired and didn;t get a lot of sleep last night, but she came in and played really, really well. I thought that was a real positive for us. Then we knocked some free throws down late and you know, those are never easy, you know. You want your players gaining confidence in that and while we don;t like the margin, we at least had to handle some things down the stretch."
On Eliza Maupin…
"Well, she's still not there yet, but her athletic ability when she plays with great effort and energy, she can find her way into some plays. And we're trying to figure out how to utilize her better. This is going to be a game where we're going to eb centerless at times because of the way they play, it's really hard for like Lauterbach to guard out on the perimeter with what they were doing. So, I came into this game saying Eliza (Maupin) was going to get some minutes at the five and she responded really well. I think you're just gonna see her keep getting better and better. "
FROM THE FLOOR
Senior Guard Gabby Gregory
On losing focus during the game…
"I mean, when you get some offensive fouls like that, it's kind of hard to get back in the groove. So me personally, and I think even my teammates to get some bogus foul calls and then getting a tech, it just kind of just makes everybody feel a little weird. And then I think Brylee (Glenn) getting hurt as well made things a little weird. So it's hard to try to get back into our groove and then I honestly don;t know. It was hard for me to get back in it."
On fatigue during the game…
"Yeah, I felt a lot better today than I did yesterday. Yesterday, I was like oh my gosh, I can't believe we got another game. But today, after we had like shoot around and stuff this morning I honestly felt fine. I got a lot of rest today on the bench."
Sophomore Guard Jaelyn Glenn
On the fatigue of 3 games in 4 days…
"Maybe a little bit down the stretch with just being like in the press. I feel like fatigue kind of set in a little bit with a couple of people, but I'm not feeling too bad after playing three games in four days honestly."
On her role today…
"Coach has me playing a lot of different roles, putting me at point guard which is yeah, super fun for me, but I am just seeing my opportunities and taking them helping my team. When rebounds just bounce up and I happen to be in the right place, you know, I want those. I was playing a little bit over aggressive so they did get a couple points off that, that coach did talk to me about just because I just wanted to steal but um yeah. Just helping my team."
