FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening Statement...
"So I thought we struggled shooting the three. It was inconsistent for us, but we did see some others hit some. We saw (Rebekah) Dallinger hit some and we saw (Emilee) Ebert hit a couple which was really nice to see. I thought our spacing was decent. You know, I thought we got off to a good start I think overall with the exception of the turnovers were early for us. It was a sloppy early game and that's one of the things we've got to settle into better and control the basketball early in the game. We certainly don't want to be giving teams live turnovers. From the other bench I was really glad Nicole Ohlde didn't check into the game. I'm not sure, she probably could've gotten 20. She's that good so I was really glad that she didn't check into the game. But all in all, I think it was a solid performance by us and got some I think hopefully some players you know, to get Ebert a few minutes here she's coming off that injury and she took a hard fall late so hopefully she, you know, isn't too bad. But I thought her in particular and Dallinger in particular gave us good lift off the bench. (Eliza) Maupin obviously continues to be athletic and run the floor well so those things stood out to me."
On the points in the paint…
"Yeah, I think a lot of that just came because we touched it in a lot of different ways. You know, we got out in the break and scored there. We had some driving lanes open and we did get some more post touches. I thought Heavenly Greer gave us a lift there on some offensive rebounds early in the game. I think, you know, we had a big size advantage tonight. You know Taylor (Lauterbach) got a "and one" down there. So you know, we needed to take advantage of that size."
On implementing the new offense…
"Yeah, I think we're closer. The pace with which we run it isn't sharp enough. And where I felt the bench gave us the biggest lift is when they came into the game. I thought their pace was pretty good in the half court offense. So that was good to see, you know, the players coming in, because occasionally a score like this can get pretty sloppy and people can come in and not play sharp and not play clean and I thought they gave us a lift in the second half."
On Eliza Maupin, Ja'Mia Harris, and Heavenly Greer…
"Yeah I think they all have done some great things. I think consistency is something that they have to continue to strive for. It's good to see Heavenly (Greer) get on the offensive glass because she can really rebound the basketball so that's an area that she can really help us at. Eliza just continues to get better every day. She's pretty consistent in practice. She's pretty consistent in the weightroom. She just continues to get better, so I'm not surprised by that. Physicality is going to be an area that she's going to have to be able to handle going forward. Harris consistency, that's where she needs to improve is being more consistent and it starts with you know, being consistent in practice, playing through fatigue, all those things that young players struggle with, but yeah. I think they've all done some good things."
FROM THE FLOOR
Serena Sundell, Sophomore Guard
On spacing and drive lanes keeping turnover numbers down…
"I think in the beginning we were too sloppy with the ball, and we're kind of figuring that out, which we need to have figured out earlier. I feel like as the game went on we figured out how to play with each other and spacing got better. Overall, I think our turnovers were good and getting better."
On getting into a groove earlier in the season than last year…
"I think there's a lot of things that I would like to do better but one of my goals coming into this season is trying to find a balance of me being aggressive and also finding my teammates. So yeah, feel good about it."
On playing with Greer, Maupin, and Harris in the exhibition games…
"Right away I've already found out that they're hard workers, and they're fun to play with. When Eliza gets out and runs I can throw it ahead and she'll finish. I think they have a lot of growing to do and we're still trying to figure out how to play together, but I'm excited to keep working with them and seeing them just continuing to get better."
