Two Bronze Medals for Wildcats at Jayhawk Jamboree

The Wildcats will get back on the water during the spring season

The K-State rowing team headed to Lawrence, Kan. for the Jayhawk Jamboree at Burcham Park on Sunday (Nov. 6). The Wildcats competed in 4.5k timed trial races against Kansas and Creighton.
 
"We're pleased with the racing from today. Overall, the crews had good length and good rhythm," said head coach Pat Sweeney.
 
The Novice 8+ raced first with a lineup consisting of sophomore coxswain Sarah Schrage, freshman Taryn Arnold, senior McKenna Johnson, freshman Zoey Whorton, freshman Kay Pakkebier, freshman Anna Staley, freshman Bianca Wollmeister, freshman Karadan Kirkpatrick and freshman Tatum Alexander. The crew earned a bronze medal with a time of 15:21.50.
 
"I was so excited to be able to push hard with my teammates and bring home a medal," said Johnson. "It was a good foundation to build off of for the coming spring."
 
K-State competed three boats in the Varsity 4+ event. K-State A finished in the top-5 with a time of 16:05.01. The lineup consisted of senior coxswain Kaitlyn Henke, sophomore Neva Roenne, junior Jadyn Greisen, sophomore Emily Stark and sophomore Kendra Hamman.
 
K-State B finished in 6th place at 16:05.93 with junior coxswain Lauren Plum, sophomore Gracyn McClain, junior Kaylee Kleinschmit, sophomore Grace Hendrickson and sophomore Halle Fee.
 
K State C finished 8th in the Varsity 4+ with sophomore coxswain Paige Fox, junior Lindsey DeVreugd, junior Alyssa Buettner, sophomore Anita Eckhardt and sophomore Anna Ryan. The crew recorded a time of 16:26.81.
 
"All races went well today," said Stark. "We performed impressively, especially since this was the first time we have been in fours all year. Everyone was lighthearted and excited to get back to racing."
 
After a break in the day the third race featured the Novice 4+ where K-State finished 5th with coxswain Schrage, Arnold, Johnson, Whorton and Pakkebier at 17:45.01.
 
"Today's race was one I had been anticipating since I committed to the team," said Johnson. "I felt like a lot of hard work had built up to this race. It was exciting to finally be out and competing on the water."
 
The last event of the day was the Varsity 8+ race with three K-State boats competing. K State A brought home a bronze medal with a time of 14:26.96. The lineup consisted of coxswain Fox, senior Madison Jensen, sophomore Jordan Girkin, sophomore Rachel Harman, sophomore Madison Koller, sophomore Symone Simmons, sophomore Madelyn Barrett, junior Idallis Shaffer and junior Patricia Hokanson.
 
"I was really proud of how all the boats worked together," said Jensen. "The younger girls really stepped up for the race! Makes me excited for the spring season."
 
K State B came in at 6th at 14:53.06 with coxswain Henke, Roenne, Greisen, Stark, Hamman, Buettner, DeVreugd, Eckhardt and Wollmeister.
 
K State C finished in 7th with coxswain Plum, McClain, Kleinschmit, Hendrickson, Fee, sophomore Jayden Brandt, Ryan, sophomore Chloe Daniels and sophomore Annika Senn.
 
"The way we rowed technically was good to see," Sweeney said. "Now we just need to train hard and put in some work to prepare us for racing in the spring."
