K-State Splits Squad This Weekend in Preparation for Big 12’s

Feb 10, 2022 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will split squads this weekend, as a majority of the team will compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa while four others will compete at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday (February 11) and Saturday (February 12).

"Iowa State is hosting the conference championships this year, so we feel it is good to compete in the facility for familiarity's sake," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "Also, Iowa State, TCU, Iowa and other schools have fine athletes that will provide good competition."

K-State is coming off a solid weekend at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska, in which, junior Hadley Splechter ran a time of 8:05.51 in the men's 3,000-meter run to break a 28-year-old school record. The previous record was set in 1994 by Frances O'Neill, also at the Husker Invitational, with a time of 8:06.09.

Also earning a spot in the K-State Top-10 Performances List was junior Kassidy Johnson. The Wichita, Kansas native clocked in a time of 2:05.57 in the women's 800-meter. Her time was 0.41 seconds off a school record and ranks her third in program history.

The Wildcats ended the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with 17 personal-bests with 12 coming from the distance events.

"We have a group of horizontal jumpers who will be competing at Arkansas this weekend as well," said Rovelto. "Generally, folks are progressing, but we also continue to have some issues with illness and some who are playing catch-up due to being out for awhile with COVID. The next couple of weeks are important for us to get healthy."

Heading off to Fayetteville, Arkansas are freshmen Kavian Kerr and Velecia Williams, along with fifth-year seniors Taishia Pryce and Wurrie Njadoe.

Kerr will compete in the men's long jump at 3:45 p.m., CT on Friday while Williams, Pryce and Njadoe jump in the women's long jump at 4:30 p.m., CT. On Saturday, Kerr will run in the men's 200-meter at 1:30 p.m., CT with Njadoe running in the women's 200-meter at 2 p.m., CT. Pryce and Williams will compete in the women's triple jump at 12 p.m.

Competition at the Iowa State Classic will kick off at 12 p.m., CT. with the men's long jump and women's 60-meter hurdle preliminaries. Saturday will begin with the men's triple jump and women's 60-meter dash at 12 p.m., CT.

Live results will be made available here by PrimeTime Timing for the Iowa State Classic and here for the Tyson Invitational by Flash Results.
