Big 12’s Indoor Championships Are Up Next for Track and Field
Feb 23, 2022 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will head back to Ames, Iowa for the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (February 25) and Saturday (February 26) at the Lied Recreation Center.
"The Big 12 has always been a very strong track and field conference and it may very well be the best it has ever been at presently," stated Director of Trak and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "On the men's side, Texas and Texas Tech have outstanding teams. The next five teams could very well end up within 15 or so points between them. On the women's side, Texas has the strongest team in the history of the conference. Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will likely battle for second place and, once again, the next four teams will probably not be separated by that many points. We will need strong efforts by both of our teams to place among the top half."
Competition will begin on Friday at 10 a.m., CT with the 60-meter hurdles of the women's pentathlon. On Saturday, the day will start at 11 a.m., CT with the 60-meter hurdles of the men's heptathlon.
The Wildcats will be sending 43 individuals to partake in the competition, 23 men and 20 women.
"Going into the meet, our folks who are competing, are relatively healthy," said Rovelto. "We will have a few potential scorers not competing due to injury, but all teams face a little of this problem."
Fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar will return after not competing since the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas on January 22. The New Delhi native is looking to earn his fourth consecutive indoor championship title in the high jump.
Shankar is currently ranked second in the nation and leads the conference in the high jump after reaching a mark of 2.25m/7-4.50 at the K-State Winter Invitational on December 11, 2021.
Also leading the Big 12 is junior Kassidy Johnson in the 1,000-meter run. Johnson recorded a time of 2:47.17, converted to 2:45.34 for track size, and placed first at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular. Back at the 2021 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, Johnson ran a time of 2:46.81, clinching the runner-up spot.
Last season, the K-State women's team recorded a third-place outing with 100.5 points, which marked the second consecutive year the group has earned a bronze medal at the conference meet. The men's team finished sixth with 66 points in 2021.
