Roadrunners Walk-Off Cats in 11 Innings
Feb 25, 2022 | Baseball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield scored the winning run off a K-State error in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday night, snatching a 4-3 walk-off victory at Hardt Field in the series opener.
With two outs in the 11th, Nic Anderson Vine sprinted home after Nick Goodwin's throw took first baseman Cash Rugely off the base. Anderson Vine singled with one out, advanced to second on a groundout and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.
K-State (0-4) took a one-run lead with two gone in the ninth when Orlando Salinas, Jr. pushed a ball down theright field line, scoring Josh Nicoloff. The Roadrunners (2-2) matched the Wildcats with a bases-loaded, two-out walk drawn by Cory Blackburn.
"We played poorly enough to get beat plenty of times before that last play," said head coach Pete Hughes after the game. "Offensively, we didn't make any adjustments and felt like we wasted another really good start by Blake Adams. We didn't make routine plays and were poor fundamentally. We'll get it fixed."
Adams' quality start was spoiled after he struck out 12 over 7 2/3 innings, both career highs. After giving up a leadoff single, Adams settled in and retired the next 12 CSUB hitters he faced, picking up eight strikeouts through the first four innings.
"He was able to throw his secondary stuff for strikes. He commanded that all night long, he was really good," Hughes said of Adams. "He just threw a ton of strikes."
Adams' night ended after issuing his second walk, coming with two out in the eighth, before giving way to closer Tyson Neighbors. Neighbors walked two in the eighth before escaping a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
Tyler Ruhl inherited the bases loaded in the ninth, taking over for Neighbors after he walked three in the ninth, the third allowing the tying run to score. Ruhl got out of the inning unscathed and finished with two strikeouts.
Ruhl, a redshirt freshman, suffered the loss after surrendering the unearned game-winning run.
Senior catcher Justin Mitchell's solo home run in the third marked the game's first run and K-State's first homer of the season. Mitchell finished 2-for-4.
Mitchell's home run was the first of two hits allowed by Bakersfield starting pitcher Benji Caggianelli. Caggianelli struck out 10 Cats over his five innings of work, allowing one run with a pair of walks.
In addition to Mitchell, Dominic Johnson and Dylan Phillips each turned in two-hit games. Phillips' RBI single tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth. Johnson doubled and scored on Phillips' first run batted in of the new season.
Johnson is the lone Wildcat to hit safely in all four games this year.
Gabe Ulloa earned the victory for the Roadrunners after keeping K-State scoreless over the final 2 1/3 innings. Ulloa yielded one base hit and struck out two.
CSUB shortstop Aaron Casillas produced the only multi-hit game for the Roadrunners, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Mitchell tallied the first hit for K-State, a solo home run in the top of the third to hand the Cats a 1-0 lead. It marked the Wildcats' first home run of the season.
Three straight hits to start the fifth led to a pair of CSU Bakersfield runs. Adams had retired 12 consecutive Roadrunners before allowing two runs.
With two on and two outs in the ninth, Salinas chopped a ball to the right side that clipped the seam of the infield grass and the dirt, squirting by CSUB first baseman Kobe Silva. It ended up being an RBI double that gave the Cats a 3-2 lead.
Ruhl entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with the scored tied 3-3 and the bases loaded. The right-handed reliever induced a pop up to escape the jam and extend the game into extra innings.
