Wildcats Return to Action at Westbrook Invitational
Feb 25, 2022 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team is set to tee off its spring season in Peoria, Arizona with the Westbrook Invitational, held Sunday and Monday at the par-72, 6,230-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club.
It's been 136 days since K-State last competed, and head coach Kristi Knight, who's the longest-tenured coach in the Big 12 in her 26th season leading the Wildcats, is more than ready to get things going again.
"We are looking forward to getting back to competition," Knight said. "The Westbrook Invitational has a great field and is such a fun event for all the players because of the community support."
Heather Fortushniak, Haley Vargas, Napua Glossner, Remington Isaac and Gabriela McNelly are the five who will comprise the scoring lineup for the Wildcats. It is the first time Knight has used this lineup combination this season.
Fortushniak, a senior, and Vargas, a junior, represent the bulk of experience for the Cats in the lineup. The two veterans will be vital leaders throughout championship season for Kansas State.
Perhaps the biggest storyline surrounding the Wildcats throughout the fall was the play of Isaac, a freshman who appeared in all four fall tournaments, as she had 100% of her rounds count toward the team score, while she also heads into the spring as the team leader in stroke average (72.83). Isaac's young career is so far highlighted by a top-five finish at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational last September.
A pair of sophomores, Glossner and McNelly, are two players to watch this spring as they are poised for an up-tick in performance. This is the fourth career scoring lineup appearance for McNelly, who claimed a top-20 finish at the Sunflower Invitational, and the fifth for Glossner.
It will be sunny skies in Arizona with temperatures in the 70s, a perfect start to the spring campaign.
The field will no doubt be a difficult test for the Wildcats as the talented 14-team field includes two fellow Big 12 members in Kansas and No. 47 Oklahoma, along with Charleston, No. 50 Denver, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, No. 36 UNLV, Washington State and host school Wisconsin, which puts on this event annually.
Despite the challenge, there is much confidence in the preparation put in by the Wildcats during the months away from competition.
"Practices have been good," Knight said. "It's time to go play."
The Westbrook Invitational will tee off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT) both days, with the first two rounds scheduled for Sunday and the final round set to conclude the tournament on Monday. Fans can follow live scoring at Golfstat.com.
