Laura Macke vs. OU

K-State Falls at the Buzzer to (20/19) Oklahoma

Feb 26, 2022 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Oklahoma – A career day from Laura Macke was spoiled by a three-pointer at the buzzer by Oklahoma's Taylor Robertson, as K-State fell 72-69, on Saturday at Lloyd Noble Center.

Macke scored a career-high 17 points and added four assists, two rebounds and two steals. The product of Baileyville, Kansas, tallied 14 points in the second half to spark K-State (18-10, 8-8 Big 12) including a game-tying 3-pointer with 22 seconds left.

Oklahoma (22-6, 11-5, Big 12) had the final possession and with just two seconds to play found Robertson in the corner near the Sooner bench and she buried the attempt to end the game.

Leading the Wildcats on Saturday was freshman Serena Sundell with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting and tied her career-high with five connections from 3-point range. Sundell also added seven assists and two steals. This was Sundell's fourth career game with 20 or more points and her sixth career game with 15 or more points and five or more assists.

Sundell is the first K-State freshman guard to tally 150 or more assists and 40 or more connections from beyond the arc in their debut season.

2022 All-America candidate Ayoka Lee, who was surrounded for much of the game, tallied 13 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks and four steals. With her point total on Saturday, Lee set the school record for points in a junior season with 635 this season, passing the previous record of 625 by Nicole Ohlde.

Oklahoma was led by Madi Williams with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Robertson notched 17.

K-State trailed by two to begin the second quarter, but a 5-0 run including a steal and layup from Sundell pushed the Wildcats in front, 22-21, with 6:40 remaining in the first half.

Oklahoma answered with an 8-0 run to hold a 29-22 lead with 3:20 left. A Sundell 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer pulled K-State to within six at the break, 34-28. Sundell paced K-State with 13 points in the opening half.

The Wildcats closed the deficit to within two, 42-40, with 5:08 left in the third quarter as Lee scored on consecutive possessions.

After the Sooners took a four-point lead, the Wildcats used a 7-2 run to take a 47-46 lead with 3:06 to play.

Oklahoma took a brief two-point lead, but Macke carded her fourth made field goal in the quarter to square the game at 49. Two free throws again gave the Sooners a brief lead but a free throw line jumper from Sundell tied it at 51 entering the final frame.

Macke finished a layup to begin the fourth quarter to give K-State a 53-51 lead. After a jumper from the Sooners, Lee completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Wildcats 56-53 lead with 8:43 left.

Oklahoma broke away with a 5-0 run to go in front by four, 64-60, as Navaeh Tot finished a transition layup and Nydia Lampkin made the first 3-pointer of her career.

The Wildcats answered back with two straight 3-pointers from Sundell to tie the game at 66 with 2:18 remaining. A Robertson 3-pointer with 1:51 left gave the Sooners the 69-66 lead before Macke tied the game.

Kansas State shot 40.0 percent (28-of-70) from the field including 9-of-22 (.409) from 3-point range. The Wildcats were just 4-of-6 from the foul line. Oklahoma carded a 47.3 percent (26-of-55) effort from the field and were 8-of-23 (.348) from 3-point range and tallied a 12-of-13 (.923) performance from the foul line.

The Wildcats registered seven blocks and 12 steals and forced the Sooners into 20 turnovers.
