Phillips, Corsentino Lead Cats to First Win
Feb 27, 2022 | Baseball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Dylan Phillips homered twice and drove in four while Blake Corsentino tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, as K-State picked up its first victory of the season with an 8-2 win over CSU Bakersfield in the series finale Sunday at Hardt Field.
Corsentino entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out after starter Christian Ruebeck walked the first four batters he faced. With one run already in for the Roadrunners, Corsentino escaped with just a sacrifice fly allowed and scattered just five hits in earning the victory.
"There's a reason why I called his name," head coach Pete Hughes said. "That was not a good situation but we needed him to pick up the team and a teammate, and he did that. Great example for all our young guys how to go about your business and build a great foundation so you're ready when your number is called."
Corsentino, a native of Ventura, California, struck out two and walked just one. He gave up just one extra-base hit, a double in the fifth inning while holding CSU Bakersfield (3-3) 1-for-8 with two outs and 1-for-12 with runners on base.
Phillips' first home run was a three-run shot in the third, erasing a two-run deficit. His next at-bat saw him hit home run No. 2, a solo shot that put K-State (1-5) in front 5-2.
"I'm proud of Dylan," Hughes said of Phillips. "Sometimes it just takes a little bit of barrel contact to get people going and teams going. We were waiting for him to do that. The three-run homer takes a lot of pressure off everybody, pitchers included and the defense included. But I am proud of him for staying with the process and not panicking, just sticking with it because the results will come."
It marked Phillips' sixth career multi-homer game and increased his career total to 33, moving him into third place on K-State's career home run list.
Blake Adams, Dominic Johnson, Justin Mitchell and Orlando Salinas, Jr. each produced two-hit days for the Cats. Johnson and Mitchell each doubled and drove in a run.
Adams, a junior transfer from Arkansas who started on the mound Friday night, went 2-for-4 and recorded a hit in his first collegiate at-bat.
Cole Johnson roped an RBI triple in the top of the eighth.
Freshman Landry Jurecka made his K-State debut and logged 1 1/3 scoreless in relief of Corsentino. The Greenwood, Arkansas, product struck out one and did not allow a base hit.
CSUB starter Kellen O'Connor suffered the loss after giving up five earned on nine hits. Cody Tucker surrendered three earned on three hits over his 3 1/3 innings of relief.
The loss snapped K-State's five-game skid to begin the season, it was tied for second-longest such streak to begin a season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
With a run already in, Corsentino inherited a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the first inning after Ruebeck walked the first four hitters he saw. Corsentino escaped the inning after allowing a sacrifice fly and CSU Bakersfield spotted a 2-0 lead.
Trailing by two in the third inning, Phillips blasted a three-run home run to put the Cats in front 3-2. In Phillips' next at-bat, he launched a solo home run that gave K-State a 5-2 advantage.
