Stellar Performances Close Out Day One of NCAA Indoor Championships
Mar 11, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was a short, but successful day for the Kansas State track and field team as the Wildcats had two outstanding performances at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (March 11) at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
With a leap of 6.49m/21-3.50 in her second attempt, fifth-year senior Taishia Pryce clinched sixth overall in the women's long jump. Her finished also earned her a first team All-America honor.
"I am really excited about how Taishia did today," stated assistant coach Vincent Johnson. "I think she did a really good job at competing. The entire field is pretty competitive. I think she did a good job of placing herself in position to get sixth. I am really excited about the way she executed the jumps. With the one or two small tweaks at the end of her landing, I think she has the potential to really be special."
A school record and personal best was what junior Kassidy Johnson needed to advance to the finals of the women's 800-meter preliminary. Johnson's time of 2:03.95 surpassed the previous school record of 2:05.16 set in 2012 by Boglarka Bozzay.
"I think she ran a really smart race," said assistant coach Ryun Godfrey. "Kassidy didn't panic, and she just stayed where she needed to and then just made the right moves. It was a really savvy race. I think she proved to herself that anything is possible."
Up next for the Wildcats is day two of the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Fifth-year senior Tejaswin Shankar will compete at 12:30 p.m. CT in the men's high jump while Johnson will run the 800-meter one more time at 7:00 p.m. CT.
