UTSA Invitational is First for 2022 Outdoor Season

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team will kick off the 2022 outdoor season on Friday (March 18) and Saturday (March 19) at the UTSA Invitational at the Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio, Texas.

"The first meet outdoors is usually a pretty good one for the long throws," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "For many, this is their first competition in a while. We will have a few where this will be their first competition in quite some time. Those transitioning from indoors have increased their training volume and working hard right now."

The UTSA Invitational comes one week after three Wildcats competed at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
Junior Kassidy Johnson highlighted the event with back-to-back school records and personal-bests in the women's 800-meters. During the preliminaries, Johnson ran a time of 2:03.95, placing second in her heat and earning an automatic spot in the finals. The next day in the 800-meter finals, Johnson clocked in at 2:03.93 and came in fifth overall. The previous school record was by Boglarka Bozzay in 2012 with a time of 2:05.16.

The Wildcats competed at the UTSA Invitational on March 19-20, 2021.

Then senior Ashley Petr made her 2020-21 debut in the women's discus and delivered a win for K-State with a mark of 55.30m/181-01.

With the help of freshman Darian Clarke and the senior trio of Jah Strange, Justin Davis and Jullane Walker, the four sprinters produced a time of 40.30 seconds to secure another win for the Wildcats in the men's 4x100-meter relay.

Competition will begin on Friday at 2 p.m. CT with the women's hammer throw while Saturday's events will take place at 11 a.m. CT with the men's pole vault.
