Hornet Invitational Moves K-State Rowing to Sacramento, California
Mar 18, 2022 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will have their first official race of the season on Saturday (March 19) and Sunday (March 20) at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, California on Lake Natoma.
Â
The Hornet Invitational, previously the Sac State Duel, will include two races on Saturday and one race on Sunday.  Each K-State boat will compete three times, creating multiple opportunities for head-to-head racing. This event will be hosted by Sacramento State and teams competing include: Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, UC San Diego and Kansas State.
Â
The regatta comes immediately after the conclusion of the team's spring camp.
Â
"The team has put in a lot of work this week leading up to this competition," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "We've seen a great deal of improvement with the consistent water time we've had at camp. Now it's time to put all of that prep work into racing and we are excited to see how we perform."
Â
The Wildcats last competed at Sacramento State back on March 8, 2020. The SAC State Duel was the only competition during the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season.
Â
In the 3v8+, coxswain Kylee Stec and rowers Jessica Gillilan, Jadyn Greisen, Ellie Hahn, Lisa Zuiderveen, Lauren Walker, Idallis Shaffer, Kate Odgers and Tessa Davids defeated the Hornets by more than 45 seconds, clocking a time of 7:06.74.
Â
The V4+ racing was combined into a single event, including both the 1v4+ and the 2v4+ from K-State. In a dominating fashion, the 1v4+ consisting of coxswain Kaitlyn Henke and rowers Logan Frost, Abigail Dressler, Elizabeth Mummert and Megan Chrisco, finished in first place at 7:36.4. The 2v4+ finished the race in third place (8:21.6).
Â
K-State also collected two second place finishes in the 2v8+ (6:55.93) and 1v8+ (6:55.47).Â
Â
The team has continued to maximize every opportunity to make forward progress, including the races this weekend.Â
Â
"Our goal is to continue improving from week to week. We're a young team but we have seen so much growth as we have been preparing for the season," said Sweeney. "We will continue to increase our speed as the season goes on, but this is a great opportunity to really go for it and set a foundation to build from."
Â
The next regatta for the Wildcats will be on April 1-2 at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Florida. The event will be hosted by the University of Central Florida.
