K-State Rowing Victorious at the Hornet Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Kansas State women's rowing squad had a successful weekend in Sacramento, California on Saturday (March 19) and Sunday (March 20). The Wildcats competed at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State and raced against UC San Diego, Sacramento State, and Saint Mary's.

"We want to thank Mike Connors and his staff for inviting us back to compete this year" said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "This weekend was a great way to start the season and really build off the successful spring camp we had. There was good racing throughout all the boats and our athletes have continued to learn how to compete. We are in a good place to start."

Day One vs. Sacramento State

The weekend began in a dominating fashion for the Wildcats as the team came in first place in three out of four events.
Â
The 2v8+ and the 3v8+ consolidated events and competed in a single race. Claiming a first-place finish in the second varsity 8+ race was the 2v8+ or "Kansas State A." The boat consisted of sophomore coxswain Kelsey Ladlie, sophomores Lauren Walker and Kaylee Kleinschmit, freshmen Rachel Harman, Anna Ryan, Madison Koller, Symone Simmons and sophomores Patricia Hokanson and Jessica Schenk. The team crossed the finish line with a time of 6:54.8 while Sacramento State finished more than 10 seconds behind at 7:05.4.

The 3v8+ or "Kansas State B", finished in third with a time of 7:15.4. The boat was comprised of all novice athletes with coxswain Paige Fox, Neva Roenne, Jordan Girkin, Grace Hendrickson, Kendra Hamman, Chloe Daniels, Faith Gates, Emily Stark and Halle Fee.

During the varsity 4+ race, the Wildcats clocked in at 7:56.1 and finished first, coming across the line more than 30 seconds faster than Sacramento State at 8:35.0. The varsity 4+ lineup consisted of sophomore coxswain Sydney Smith, sophomores Lindsey DeVreugd, and Alyssa Buettner, freshman Anita Eckhardt and rounding out the boat was freshman Catie Wood.

Closing out the first half of the day was a victory in the novice 4+ race. The Wildcats won by a margin of 19 seconds. In the boat was freshman coxswain Sarah Schrage, freshmen Gracyn McClain, Madelyn Barrett, Jayden Brandt and Annika Senn.

The 1v8+ came in second to Sac State with a time of 6:55.1. The lineup included: sophomore coxswain Lauren Plum, junior Ellie Hahn, sophomore Jadyn Greisen, junior Elizabeth Mummert, junior Maya Morrow,junior Madison Jensen, junior Megan Michaelis, sophomore Idallis Shaffer and junior Kate Odgers.

Day One vs. Saint Mary's

The Wildcats maintained the same lineups in four out of five boats as they headed into the afternoon to compete against St. Mary's College. In each race, K-State was crowned the champion.

In the first varsity 8+ race, the 'Cats recorded a time of 7:01.3 while Saint Mary's finished in 7:21.5.

The second race of the day featured the 2v8+ and 3v8+ from K-State competing in the second varsity 8+ event. The 2v8+ ("Kansas State A") placed first (7:18.6) followed by the 3v8+ ("Kansas State B") (7:32.3).

The third event of the day featured the 1v4+ and 2v4+ from Kansas State. First and second went to the Wildcats in the varsity 4+ event. With a time of 8:30.9, the 1v4+ ("Kansas State A") claimed first place. The 2v4+ ("Kansas State B") finished in second with time of 8:59.9. The second varsity 4+ consisted of freshmen coxswain Sarah Schrage, freshmen Gracyn McClain, Madelyn Marret, Jayden Brandt, and sophomore Madelyn Davis.

Day Two vs. UC San Diego

The Wildcats claimed first place in all three events with the same lineups as the morning of day one. Conditions deteriorated as the morning continued, building to a strong north crosswind at 12-15 mph.

The first varsity 8+ set the tone with a hard-fought race to victory. K-State recorded a time of 6:56.7 while UC San Diego finished in 7:02.3.

The second varsity 8+ race mimicked racing from the day before, with two boats competing for the Wildcats. The 2v8+ ("Kansas State A") came in first place with a time of 7:04.8 with UC San Diego in second place. Â Coming in third was the 3v8+ ("Kansas State B") at 7:21.3.

Finishing the final day of competition was the varsity 4+ race. First and second went to the Wildcats as the 1v4+ ("Kansas State A") came in at 7:53.7 while the 2v4+ ("Kansas State B") finished at 8:18.2.

The Cats have continued to make forward progress and the weekend shaped the foundation they will build from the rest of the season.

"Not only did we see an increase in boat speed, but we were able to see our young athletes take steps forward as they are maturing into real competitors," said Sweeney. "The goal is to hold onto everything we learned this weekend and continue to build from there."

K-State will take a short break as they prepare for the Sunshine State Invitational hosted by UCF. The regatta will take place in Sarasota, Florida on Friday (April 1) and Saturday (April 2). Start times will be announced at a later date.
